Man, I really dig this.

Say what you will about the ending, The Stand is still in my top three King books of all time, and this miniseries hit all the right notes for me.

I think the casting, for the most part, is top notch.

The teleplay by King is damn good. The music choices are great, and Gary Sinise is awesome.

I've watched this thing a few dozen times, and I always enjoy the hell out of it.

M-O-O-N, that spells good.

Yeah, this is a very good miniseries...the best adaptation of any of King's novels.

Going a bit off-topic here, but have you ever read THE LONG WALK? That is one of my favorite King stories of all time, I'd love to see it made into a movie.

That was a Bachman book, right?

I read it when it came out way back when and remember liking it. I think it may be time for a re-read.

I read the book and loved it but was never fully aware of any mini series enough to watch it.

Yep, that was a Bachman book. Hell, I'll re-read it along with ya, soon as I finish Watchmen again.

I love The Stand...it was my first Stephen King, back when I was sixteen, and it was just mesmerising...the problem that I have with the mini series is that many of the absurdities of the story that King's brilliant prose style makes you overlook or not notice at all stand out (heh) starkly when presented as drama imo.

Books are almost always better. It was a decent book but horrible series/movie. My all time favorite is The shining. I thought the movie was handled well. I like the awkwardness of it, maybe im just a fan of kubrik. The book was still better but Jack sold crazy. When he is looking out the window while the wife and kid are in the maze... that was a great look.

Shelly and Jack truly hated one another and had some issues filming because of it. That animosity between them is real. They had to keep them seperated alot of the time.

My favorite part is Rob Lowe's dream. "I can hear! I can talk!"

Wasn't his character black in the book?

I forget the actor's name, but the dude that played Larry Underwood was very good ... though I still see (in my head) the character as Bruce Springstien. Ever since I read King's forward in the unabridged edition.

The mini-series was very cool, particularly the first couple of episodes. They did a nice job of capturing the desolation of New York, and the shear horror of the tunnels. And the choice of Blue Oyster Cult's 'Don't Fear The Reaper' for the first episode was inspired.

I still reread 'The Stand' every few years. The first 90 or so percent of the book are just like comfort food to me ... the last 10 percent is like a dietary desert ... no sugar, and ultimately, unsatisfying. I have NEVER stopped rooting for Mr. Flagg an his gang of rebels.

I thought this would be about the comic series out or coming out.

Chris failed me again

I enjoyed the TV miniseries version. There was some great casting there, notably Gary Sinise as Stu Redman, Ray Walston as Glen Bateman, Matt Frewer as Trashcan Man, and Bill Fagerbakke as Tom Cullen. Plus, even though I felt he wasn't a good choice for Nick, Rob Lowe did a better job than I expected.

"Don't Dream It's Over" by Crowded House is also used to good effect.

IDWTP. The Stand was good, but I think the best adaptation would be Misery.

Would you believe my mother bought The Stand for me (paperback) when I was 11? It was very scary to me at that age.

I read it again in college when that new, fatter version came out. The best thing about the book is the power of King's portrayal of the "empty" world.

The best thing about the TV miniseries was the casting. Most of the roles case were pretty good.

And they opened the miniseries, I believe, with the song "Don't Fear the Reaper." I'll always believe that King was inspired to write the whole book by that song. (I know that the lyrics appear in the book, I'm just saying the song is such a perfect match tor the feel of the book that I think he wrote it because of the song.).

I wonder which came out first, "Don't Fear the Reaper," or the original publication of the Captain Trips story that was included in Night Shift? (I don't know what magazine the Captain Trips story was in, a lot of them were in Cavalier).
