Are comics still stigmatized? Would you mention comics as a hobby in a dating profile or a personal ad or on a first date? :o :?

My bedroom is literally lined with bookcases containing nothing but comics. (The ones containing books are in another room.) I tend to get that info out there pretty early in the game.

That said, I'm not the online dating or personal ad type. Maybe that information plays out differently in those contexts.

Those women are not worth my trouble, no matter how good looking or sexually willing.

Neither was I, the girlfriends I had I met under more normal circumstances. But it just seems to be the thing to do now. I can't be taking cooking classes or going to fitness centers or discos hoping to bump into the right girl. I don't have time for that now. You'd be surprised at the number of people searching for a partner online.

Well said, even if I don't entirely agree!

Oh, I'm not surprised at all. I just said that I wasn't one of them.

But whatever gets you through the night, y'know? Rock that mouse and meet them chicks on the IntraWUB if that's the route you like, man. And tell 'em early about the comics!

Yeah, first, second date. I usually mention it when the subject comes up. But with moderation.

For example the girl who asked me about The Spirit movie. It was a second date and I told her it was a comic book character created by someone named Will Eisner, of whom I am a fan. However, I did not exhibit my exuberance I usually display when talking about the Frank Miller movie.

In other words, yes, I say I am a comic book fan early on. But that I am a anal fanboy geek? That takes some time.

I don't see why you should feel embarrased to mention collecting comics. If the girl is intelligent enough she will be able to appreciate the greater aesthetic of the artwork and cultural significance of the comic, rather than dismissing it as "kid's stuff" .You might have to educate her in that respect though.

It's a matter of picking the right girl-education is usually a good yardstick to use. Also go and play her some Ray Coniff as I've said many times before,-if she gets the postmodern irony thing she *might* be smart enough.

Ray Conniff's "Beyond the sea" should melt any girl's heart...

I've mentioned my love for comics to my employees, my boss, my family, my friends, the bartender, and whoever else. I've read them while out at Little League games with my son and at Scout meetings. Because I think my own lack of shame isn't the point and isn't the question, I'll address the reaction I've gotten: Most people don't care. One mom said, "Oh, I remember those guys!" about a book I was reading. I've had people say, "Is that one of them 'graphic novels?'" Some people have seen me reading a comic and expressed enthusiasm for some upcoming comic book movie, or asked me if I'm going to see it. And so on. Never got an ill look, an expression of surprise that I read them, or anything else of that nature.

So I'd say no, comics are not stigmatized the way they used to be. They're only as shameful as you allow them to be. If you drag your insecurities into it, sure, but otherwise ... no big deal.

I don't think they're stigmatized.

CD collecting is much sexier than comic book collecting.

I concur with that, being a CD collector first and foremost. It's perhaps best not to mention the comics thing in an ad, but maybe in passing on the first or second date. I think music, movies, and books are better selling points. But comics is an exotic subculture, I'm sure there are women out there hip to that aspect, or at least I hope so! :)

I agree Jimbo !!

But not to the under 30s perhaps,to them it might just be a sign of age. :sigh:

I sometimes wonder if the majority of women (with the obvious exceptions on here Linda !) aren't as enthusiastic about music in general as men.I've also yet to meet a woman who is also seriously an avid collector of music.Names of bands don't usually register,or seem to obviously impress.
I would definitely mention the comics and passion for music but try not to appear too geeky about it.
A concert is a much better bet or a mainstream film.In that way she can also do the talking.

Try dating a children's or youth services librarian. Most of them are enthusiastic about their graphic novel sections. And would probably be glad to have someone who can steer them to good all-ages material!
