I'm a Tivo. And yes, I watch less because I tend to be more intentional and deliberate in my viewing.

Let me know if you have any questions about it. We're on our second TiVo box and have had it for years. We'll never give it up.

TiVos are the best. I'm on my third one now. Got my first one (Tivo Series 1) in 2002. I got a second one( Tivo Series 2) in 2005. Both of those are now inactive thanks to my purchase last year of a Tivo HD.

The only thing I don't like about our Tivo HD is that it's incompatible with newer "FiOS" fiber-optic television and Internet. We get junk mail every week about AT&T UVerse and it's significantly cheaper than our current TV + Internet. :( Oh well.

Yeah. The Tivo HD is not compatible with AT&T UVerse, since they don't use CableCards. I have seen on the Tivo Community forums that the Tivo HD does work with Verizon's Fios service.

So far it is very user friendly. It's very easy to pick up. And the little Tivo noises are fun. Hopefully that doesn't becomes tiresome. It didn't take long to set up either. Even for a slightly disorganized person like me. On Friday night we set it up and it was going in about an hour. The price was right. About a third of the dvr provided by our local cable company. And so much more in the way of features. I am really happy we got it. :ohyes:

We've had our TiVo noises silenced for a couple of years now. :)

I've had if for 6 or 7 years now. The noises have never got on my nerves.

there are some remote codes you can plug in to have your box act differently

Select play select 3 0 select

Makes your Forward Jump 30'secs instead of 15 minutes Does well for me for jumping over commercials

theres a number of others such as making the banner leave quicker and such, but the 30 sec jump is the only one to stick in my household.

30 Second jump is the only one I have memorized. It's a must.

There's all kinds of good discussion on the official Tivo forums. One of the Mac Daddies of that forum lives right nearby me. I took my Tivo to him years ago and had it hacked, modded, and a new hard drive put in it (400 hours). I don't use any of the modded features now, though.

And I think the new ones do all that without being hacked (you can network it, put music and photos on the screen using it, do multiroom viewing with it, etc.)

So far Tivo has been well worth the money. I have tried the 30 second skip. But the fast forward works fairly quickly so I am mostly using that. I love being able to pause live tv. That's fun.

I've got 2 TiVos that I am thinking about giving away as I haven't used either of them in about a year.

Phillips TiVo Series 1
Upgraded to 162hrs recording time.
Added a Turbonet (ethernet card)

TiVo Series 2 140hr model
w/ USB to ethernet adapter.

I would love to have them, but I don't think they would work with DirecTV.

Would they work if I switched to Cable?

If you "give them away," does the license follow them (are they paid up, or require a monthly fee?)

They will work with any type of service. They are the analog models. They take the video out of your cable box or Directv box and record it, I've used them both with satellit and cable in the past. They also have an IR emitter to change the channel on the box. Both are inactive and have been for about a year, so they would need to re-activated and have a service plan. Monthly or pre-paid for a year I think are the options.
