I haven't drawn for a long time and have recently started back up a bit.

After a couple hours, my hands starts hurting, sometimes badly. I got curious -- is it that my hand muscles are out of shape and just need to get back into shape or is it that I need to learn to grip the pen differently or adjust in some other way.

Anyone have experience with this?

Yeah, happens a lot. Sometimes I get tightness in the muscles between the thumb and index. Sometimes I feel discomfort in my wrist.

I have the same thing when I write any length of time. You just lose the habits and probably muscle training.

My hand doesn't hurt when I draw but it seems almost all of the rest of me hurts. :D

Asked over on the Dragon board and got some pretty solid advice from some amateur cartoonists --

Savage Raven wrote:
Take 10 minute breaks at least every hour and a half. It seems annoying but you'll be able to draw for much longer if you do. Don't draw through the pain. It WILL get worse. Make sure your drawing on a surface that's tilted towards you (like with a drawing table) so you aren't putting unnecessary strain on your shoulders. It sounds dumb but you can take a 5 lb weight and just do reps every now and then to keep your drawing arm strong. I started doing that and my wrist pain is non existent now. Also you can hold the weight in your hand and just move your wrist around as much as you can within a natural range of motion and that helps too.

Lastly if you still need help with pain after drawing you can stick your hand and wrist in hot and cold water alternating between the two. If you have a double sink you can fill one side with ice water and the other side with hot water and just switch between the two. Read this is how massage therapists help their hands and wrists and I gotta say it helps. This is really good if you're taking a long break.

But the increased focus on regular reps and taking breaks is what has really helped me the most.

BrightRaven wrote:
Yeah. Only usually it's after 5 + hours for me. Anyway... what you need to do as Erik says is stop and take a break from the work for a bit. (Honestly, this is never a bad thing - the artist needs to take a break, stand up and stretch, take a bit of time away from the work and come back to look at it with 'fresh eyes' periodically, anyway.) If the hand is really sore, then I suggest you soak it in hot water with Epsom salts, probably 15-30 minutes until the water cools down. If it's just the fingers that are bothering you, then you are probably holding the pencil / pen / brush too tightly, and not knowing how you hold the items, I can't really suggest how to adjust it - we all hold tools at different angles and the type of pencil and the type of lead used makes a noticeable difference in the amount of pressure one applies, the type of brush makes a difference, etc. You may want to experiment with different kinds of tools and see if that makes a difference.

If it's your wrist and the entire hand, then you may want to invest is a light wrist guard or a wrap, that you should be able to get reasonably cheap at a pharmacy or Wal-Mart or something without involving a medical professional.

Perez' hand/wrist got jacked up pretty bad at one point. I think he had surgery on it.

Actually have my wrist strapped up right now as I gave myself tendonitis doing about 60 hours work over 4 days on the last piece I did.

But then I am an idiot.

Yeah, I try that and also flexing the hand; opening and closing the fingers a few times and also bending the wrist up and down. There was an exercise I found that was helpful which I've mostly forgotten. Found this just now:

I've been spending way, way too much time on a page I've been doing; at this rate, I'll have a 22 page comic done in a year or more -- and a fucked up hand to show for my efforts. I started working digitally to help make things go faster, but the ability to zoom in and "erase" ink has fed into some sort of OCD where I become a tedious perfectionist.

I need to start working faster somehow -- I'm hoping it's just because I'm so out of practice and that I'll speed up after doing some more work. If that's not the case, I need to use a simpler style or something.

Trouble is that you draw the way you draw and the speed comes from doing it all the time. If you have a full time job and are drawing comics after work for a couple of hours it's really hard to get fast. Now, if you could draw comcis 8-12 hours a day you would get faster through repetition.

I don't know, I think certain aspects of your drawing style are uncontrollable but I think you can change things to be more efficient.

Michael Avon Oeming was a full-time pro, but then the work dried up and he was in a position where he could only support his family with comics part-time, so he changed his style from something more mainstream to the Timm/Mignola hybrid he currently uses to be faster since he had a day-job as well.

My basic plan would be to use more cartoony anatomy with less muscle definition and to cut out a lot of rendering linework.

It can be tricky to streamline your style but worth the effort.

I wish I could work more like John Romita, Jr and draw straight onto the bristol board.

I draw my pages first on copy paper ruled to comic size. It's supposed to be sketched out but I end up working on the drawing too much and they look like pencils. This way I beat the crap out of the copy paper and not erase holes in the bristol. Then I blow the pages up on a copy machine and lightbox the drawing on the bristol board. It's not quite tracing, I try to keep the pencils from being stiff and I also try to improve the drawing. Then I ink the pages. This has made me rethink the storytelling because I don't hesitate to erase or make changes.
