Here's a pic of War Machine that I coloured for the guy who runs the Iron Man Armory. It was pencilled by Kevin Hopgood, another Iron Man artist.

You shouldn't do that Ian. You're making me feel like an amateur.

Oh wait. I am.

Beautiful piece!

Thanks, Matthew :)

This one is a bit unusual - it was a commission to colour this Mike Grell Green Lantern piece. And, to keep the pencil texture (especially on the energy of the ring recharging), I just did it as a pencils-to-colour job.

Now, the unusual part is in that energy - normally, I would have made it a bright colour. In fact, originally I had it as a bright green, with a much lighter background to make the green stand out. However, the client really wanted the energy to be in black (to better show the pencil texture, I suppose) and the background a bit darker.

Overall, I do like how it turned out. It is just different from how I originally envisioned it.

But, hey, the client gets what they want - they is payin' da bills :D

I had been planning on doing a Work In Progress thread on colouring this image, but the thing was so damn big (it was painted at 11"x17", at 450dpi, and colouring over pencils always makes the file even bigger) that it was going to be a big hassle to keep saving a 'for web' version. So I didn't :)

If you are curious about this sorta thing, the final high-rez version that I sent to the client was around 80megs in size.

Both are nice, but I far and away prefer the first version (your original vision), it's much more dramatic!

Well, the more I think about it, the more I realize that it'll be pretty complex.

See, I really want to talk about how I included that 'star field' effect over the Ancient One himself. But, that was all done using Channels.

Channels are tricky to describe how to use - plus, a lot of folks who are using Photoshop aren't actually using Photoshop. Instead, they are using Photoshop LE (or one of those similar stripped-down versions), and most of those don't use Channels. So, it might not make any sense...

hmm...

I will probably still do it - I just have to think about how to approach it :)

Well, thanks :)

Fortunately it was very easy to change. The way I paint, most changes (aside from re-modeling stuff) are fairly simple.

That Mike Grell piece is great! Lately, I haven't liked many of his color pieces, mainly because his watercolors seemed so washed out.
