I look do look forward to seeing your version. Are you going for watercolors, acrylics, oils? I ask because the latter two will obscure whatever you print out. When I have tried something REALLY large with acrylics, I have managed to borrow a projector and put my image on the canvas using the projected image as my guide.

Oh, watercolours.....dyes to be more precise. I've been a big fan of Dr. Martin's watercolour dyes, ever since I discovered them. Awesome stuff.

I first discovered those back in college. They worked well for me when I did airbrushing, but I could not for the life of me color a comic with them. My major problem was coloring large areas so that one part would not become dry and get a second darker coat when I was trying to do the detail work. You are a brave man!!!

Well, it does offer a different look. Airbrushing would largely give you the effect of what you get in yer computer-rendering, so the computer would be a far more efficient tool.
There are a few tricks to using them in different ways, such as the arge areas you state...one way to do that is to lay down a field of wetness in the large area you want to paint, soaking it good. THEN, bring in brushfuls (IZZAT a word?) of coloured water and paint it in the field of water you've already set up. Its feels better to paint (for me) and have some element of chance or surprise than to keep it reigned in and under control.
There is that element of layering in colours slowly with dyes; it is a little slow at times, but often the reaction of paper to the dyes will quite surprise you and be what my professor used to call a "happy accident".
I'll see what i can find of samples for you to see some work while I figure out the best way to print this BIG image onto some decent paper.

Speaking of printing, I went to Kinko's this evening and dropped off my recently completed Cap in WWII. They can do nice color printing on vinyl for $10 per square foot, so I am getting an 18" x 12" print of Cap for about $15. I also noticed that they have a copier there that can do major enlargements and print on up to 30" wide and 1/2" thick paper. Just something to ponder!

This is one that I halfway expect John Byrne to yell at me about. I added the finger and shield tips and the black border. I also inked the entire thing again to make it look good enough to print at a large size.

This is a small version, but I do love this image. I know he ticks a lot of people off, but JB sure is talented.

What a coincidence. I just clicked over to the JBF about a
half hour ago & saw that particular thread. I loved the colored
version of the picture & I saved it on my computer. And hey,
I doubt you'll get many people on this board who'll deny Byrne's
talent as an artist, regardless of what some members may think
of him personally. Still, I thought it was a little odd that he
can't seem to understand why some people might look at the
picture & assume the G.I. in the back is Bucky. You'd figure
that's the reason why he has an "A" that looks just like
Captain America's symbol on his helmet, because he's Cap's
partner. Whatever.

Still, you say it's a smaller version, but it looks like it's the same
size as the one on the JBF. I can't even see the whole pic on
the screen, I have to move it around to look at it. But it's nice.

The "A" made me think Bucky. Why else would a young looking soldier following Captain America have an "A" on his helmet? I was really asking who the other soldier was because I thought it might represent the guy who commissioned the piece or someone related to him.

I do love those Mustangs in the sky! I may be wrong, but I can kind of imagine JB holding up his Mustang model when he drew those.

This one is a little larger than the version on JBF, but they are both a bit smaller than what I ended up with. The image here is 1,200 wide, but my "original" version is 3,000 wide.

The only thing that wouldn't suggest Bucky to me is that he didn't often carry a gun, did he? He was more a gofer, than a soldier, right? Something about the unit keeping him on, after his old man got killed?
Anyway, GC, that looks terrific! Beautiful colours. Nicely subdued, and not too "hot" as some folks colour everything. I really like Cap's blazing blue eyes--as he should have, to make the ladies swoon, eh? Very, very nice.

Yeah, I've had Kinko's do a wide variety of stuff. I'm sure my professor just stole the line from Ross; I couldn't recall who said it first, or I woulda mentioned the attribution.

One of the funniest bits I ever saw was some comedian doing a Bob Ross impression where Bob goes psycho having a 'Nam flashback. Loved Bob Ross's paintings, by the way. He's another person that my professors would consider an illustrator rather than an "artist." Makes me proud to be an illustrator!

Ugh! The old argument will never die! I usedta take painting classes, so I could just razz "real artists".
