Trying one where I emphasize the limbs more than the chest and shoulders.

I don't know why I'm wasting so much time on this, but I decided to draw Conan in several different art styles as an experiment / example of style I can do. I don't know if I'll finish this. Right now I've got a classic superhero version, then a "realistic" Brian Bolland type thing, and then a Mike Ploog / Eisner inspired one. I guess if I keep on, I should try a Steve Rude one, a Mike Mignola type one, and some other sorta cartoony one.

Okay, I took the same basic figure (simple line art on left) and rendered it two other ways -- as simple as I felt was possible while meeting my tastes, then using Mignola style spoting of blacks, and then the one I did yesterday. Thoughts? reference?

It reminds me of when Andre LeBlanc, Will Eisner’s teaching partner and illustrator of the Illustrated Bible, ghost artist on the Phantom and Flash Gordon, told me it was a good idea not to use feathering. He said to keep the drawing simple, especially when it’s small. He said to introduce feathering when my light and shadow and draftsmanship caught up. I didn’t feather anything for over a year. That’s what your progression reminds me of.

Feathering is an interesting thing -- the purpose is to create a grey tone on the art but it's evolved into a stylistic choice that sometimes becomes an end unto itself.

I liked the 'classic superhero' version of Conan. You do that style really well, IMO.

The middle two are my favorites. I think the far left one would be great on some classic superhero characters -- Superman, or Captain America or some such. All the black on the third one looks really sweet. I'm a fan of that Mignola-style dealio, and it looks good on your style.

I like the second and the last one best. All are excellent though.

I really dig your style and how good you have gotten over the years. (not that you ever sucked but that I have seen remarkable improvement and it rocks)

Thanks, I really appreciate that.
Working digitally has really, really helped. It helps my process so much and I don't have the steady hand you need for the fine lines I like to use.
Even if I had to work physically to sell original art for a living, I'd draw it digitally, print it blueline, and then ink that.
