I tend to do the contour lines and establish my line weights using my drawing's light source (thinner lines facing the light, thicker lines facing away). You can also opt for a dead lineweight here, add your blacks, and then go to final line weights afterwards.

You should buy this, just for the art. It's a nice book.

I think I bought that for my brother years ago, back when he used to ink my stuff.

Just use logic. Think of where the light is coming from -- the areas furthest away from the light are going to be the darkest.

You can also use some creative license and use blacks to frame your image in a way that makes the important elements "pop".
