Reviews
The intensity and accuracy of the scholarship in this monumental effort cannot be praised enough ... To give Coltrane his due in book form is to be as painstaking in researching as Coltrane was in practicing. This book honors its subject through such exercise of care. - AllAboutJazz.com

This opus is clearly the culmination of decades of dedicated and diligent resesarch and is wholly worthy of its illustrious subject. No serious collector of jazz literature can afford to be without it. - Bob Weir, Names & Numbers

Product Description
The 'facts' about Coltrane's life and work have never been definitely established. In The John Coltrane Reference, well-known Coltrane biographer and jazz educator Lewis Porter has assembled an international team of scholars to remedy this situation.

I'll look forward to what you have to say Rick, even with the lower price I'd like to have some idea of what it's like.

On a preliminary flip through, I noticed a load more text concerning the shows and the recording sessions. There are a lot more reviews and press related info. There didn't seem to be much of that in the 93 version. Of course being 15 years later the discog. is more thorough. There are many more photos of releases, concert shots and there's a high gloss center section with some that I haven't seen before. Federico maybe you can enlighten me but I thought the Dinah Washington question has never been fully explained. The 93 version states that Fuji wasn't sure if Trane ever played on a Dinah recording. I don't know if the writers found more evidence or not but it they are published as happening. There's a lot more info on early days including some names I have never heard before. As far as the price goes it is pretty steep but I have to keep in mind that I am paying for the time and research that went into this. I may be hasty in saying this but it's gotta be the last word on the professional years of Coltrane.

I don't know how they settled that question or even how certain they are. I looked around the discography website, checked the updates, etc. but I don't see any reference to the issue.
