No release date yet, but the authors are shooting for the fall. The book's co-authors are Curt Gooch and Jeff Suhs, who wrote the essential KISS Alive Forever. I've been waiting for a book on Neil Bogart and Casablanca. It's a soap opera unto itself.

http://www.musicforte.com/shop/lyrics-a ... EveryNight

Now it can be told! The true, behind-the-scenes story of Casablanca Records, from an eyewitness to the excess and insanity.

Casablanca was not a product of the 1970s, it was the 1970s.

From 1974 to 1980, the landscape of American culture was a banquet of hedonism and self-indulgence, and no person or company in that era of narcissism and druggy gluttony was more emblematic of the times than Casablanca Records and its magnetic founder, Neil Bogart. And Party Every Day is a frontline look at the record label that exploded onto the 1970s music scene, rising faster, burning brighter, and crashing in a more spectacular fashion than any other label in history.

From Bogart's daring first signing, the positively pyrotechnic KISS, through the discovery and superstardom of Donna Summer and the Village People – not to mention extraterrestrial funk master George Clinton and his circus of freaks, Parliament Funkadelic – to the descent into the manic world of disco and its attendant vices, this book charts Bogart's meteoric success and eventual collapse under the weight of uncontrolled ego and hype. ...Nd Party Every Night is a compelling tale of ambition, greed, excess, and some of the era's most biggest music acts.

Written with great candor and humor by Larry Harris, Casablanca's cofounder and former senior vice president and managing director, And Party Every Day is the only definitive and firsthand look a t Casablanca's remarkable story, and a breathtaking view of that great American era of extravagance. Includes dozens of never-before-seen photos and a complete discography.

The following is from Jeff Suhs:

Hi all,

It's been ages (quite literally years) since I posted on the board,
but the recent thread on Casablanca is as good a reason as any to
share some exciting news.

Casablanca Records, as most of you know, was KISS's original home, and
the place where many acts, even the disco movement itself to a large
degree, got their start. Some of you know that Larry Harris was the
executive vice president and part owner of the label.

Over the course of the past two years, Curt Gooch and I have had the
great privilege of working with Larry Harris on his Casablanca
memoirs. The efforts have resulted in the only authorized, insider's
recounting of Casablanca Records' amazing rise and equally
catastrophic fall. This is not some third-party take on things; Larry
lived this, front-row-center, for seven years. There is no person
alive today more qualified to tell this tale.

We do not have a lot of specifics yet, except to say the book is
almost finished and will be published by Backbeat Books (an imprint of
Hal Leonard) this fall. The working title is ...And Party Every Day:
The Inside Story of Casablanca Records.

I don't know how big the book will be, or how many pages. It is a text-
heavy book and gets into some great (and we think fascinating) detail
about KISS, Donna Summer, the Village People, Parliament, and Angel,
among dozens of other acts, and (of course) the remarkable and
ambitious Neil Bogart. It will definitely contain photos, and much
like we did with KISS Alive Forever, we went out of our way to make
sure almost all of them have never been seen before.

I'm happy to answer any questions that anyone might have. Speaking for
Larry, Curt, and myself, we can't wait for you all to read it.

Jeff Suhs

And of course, they'll have to mention the Here's Johnny: Magic Moments From The Tonight Show album that almost sank the company before it hit it big with KISS and Donna Summer.

Wasn't that their first release? Or one of them?

I'm pretty sure that KISS's debut album was their very first release. I believe that the Here's Johnny album was released in late 1974/early 1975. Neil Bogart was so convinced of its commercial potential that he overpressed the amount of albums for the initial pressing. It gave rise to the industry joke that it shipped gold and returned platinum. Or something like that.

Oh crap - it was the Tonight Show album I was thinking of. I mean, I actually have the Hollywood Squares album, but I'm not sure it was a Casablanca release.

[Edit: Nope. It was Event.    :sigh: :sigh: :sigh: :ohno: :ohno: :ohno: ]

Oh, the shame...

That's a must read for me and not just because of the Kiss connection.

Piper were a major failure for this label-of course Billy Squier went on to great success solo. Angel were on Casablanca and I think Dr. Hook towards the end of their career.
Can't remember who else-all I know is the only band I ever bought anything from on that label was indeed KISS!

NEW CASABLANCA RECORDS INSIDERS BOOK COMING THIS FALL

And Party Every Day: The Inside Story Of Casablanca Records, a 300+ page hardcover biography will be released this fall through Backbeat/Hal Leonard Books. This is the first time a full-length book has been published on the legendary 1970s record label and its enigmatic founder Neil Bogart. Casablanca was home to iconic hard rock acts KISS and Angel, as well as several of the decade's most visual and influential artists like Parliament, the Village People and Donna Summer.

And Party Every Day was written by Larry Harris, former Casablanca Vice President, who co-owned and co-founded the infamous record label with Bogart. Harris shares credit with co-authors Curt Gooch and Jeff Suhs, whose critically-acclaimed 2002 publication KISS Alive Forever is widely regarded as the most authoritative book ever written on the band.

With Harris's unique perspective, the world will finally gain a first-hand glimpse inside Casablanca, the record label which discovered KISS and was the living embodiment of the 1970s and the hedonistic, sex- and drug-filled Bacchanal that defined the Me Decade. The story of Casablanca Records is a thrilling three-act drama that perfectly captures the American Dream. On nothing more than a whim and the momentum of Neil Bogart's unstoppable enthusiasm, Casablanca launched in 1973. A mere five years later, Casablanca was the hottest record label in the world. In the pages of And Party Every Day, you'll walk the halls of Casablanca's Sunset Boulevard casbah, past mounds of cocaine and empty Quaalude bottles, and watch from the front row as Casablanca carefully orchestrated the record industry to its designs, successes, and ultimate demise.

In keeping with the Casablanca philosophy of "always give the fans something more," And Party Every Day will contain over 30 never-before-seen images and a heavily annotated Casablanca discography/videography section. The book will also become one of the very first publications to be promoted online featuring unreleased vintage film and video clips.

The owners of the Casablanca label, Universal Music Group, have even made available the classic Casablanca logo and artwork for the cover via a first-of-its-kind licensing deal. Several additional co-promotes with prospective major media vendors are being considered. Official And Party Every Day Twitter and Web pages will be launched in the coming weeks, along with a YouTube channel.

And Party Every Day: The Inside Story Of Casablanca Records' cover art will be released later this week when it dons the cover of the prestigious Hal Leonard Group's 2009 Fall Catalog.

Great read! Lots of interesting stuff here. I'm glad that Larry wrote this book and finally gave an insider's view of that wild, crazy era of the record business in the '70s. You aint never gonna see a time like that again!!

There's also a you tube channel with some classic '70s Casablanca videos! I'm sure a lot of people here will have some fun with those!

There is a documentary on Casablanca Records on VHS, but I've never watched it. They could reissue it on DVD. My book has been dispatched, but it has a longer way to go than yours before I get it.

It's not really a documentary, Emilio. I think you're referring to Inside The Casbah. It's a collection of promo videos by KISS, Parliament, Village People, Angel & others as well as TV ads and some footage made to look like news profiles, but in reality are promotional materials for KISS's solo albums and the Village People doing a photoshoot for the cover of their Crusin' album. A lot of fun to watch, but not really what I'd call a "documentary."

Good to see you around these parts, old friend!

Thanks, Chris. But it would be still good to have it on DVD.
