Uncle Rog,

Do you think that story of the Hulk is a metaphor for self-control? In Hulk #227, the Hulk and Banner fought one another exclaiming that "There are no terms" under which they could coexist. Its a fine line, but sometimes the Hulk appears as another personality distinct from Banner and sometimes Hulk appears as Banner's own dark feelings given life. Sometimes he even seems like Banner's lost childhood persona, especially in the 70's Hulk and Defenders stories. I remember in the Ed Norton film, the Hulk just kicks some guy who was just standing there, not attacking him at that moment. To me, that seemed way out of character, even for an enraged Hulk. I guess every writer and editor has their own take on the Hulk/Banner dynamic, but there has to be some through-line. Or does there?

I remember in an Illuminati one-shot, a SHIELD agent says that seventeen innocent people were killed during Hulk's rampage in Vegas. So I looked up that then-recent Fantastic Four story of the Hulk in Vegas to confirm this. Nothing remotely like that happened in that story. And then Amadeus Cho showed up trying to explain to everybody that the Hulk doesn't kill (innocent people at least). It was like there was a war within Marvel about how to characterize the Hulk. Thankfully, it appears that the fact that the Hulk protects the innocent even during his rampages has been upheld. When you had the Hulk destroy a city, you knew the Hulk wasn't killing innocent people, right?

It certainly can be.

Well, it's nice if there is.

I always saw the Hulk as Banner's released Id, given form by the gamma radiation. It's more complicated than that, of course, but that's the foundation. Others may differ.

Don't know from that. It's been years since I've read any Hulk stories. It'll be interesting to see what Mark Waid comes up with.

Oh, I knew. I'm not sure if the Hulk knew ... or cared.
