At the the store by me, books didn't really move much until the 90% other than Sci-Fi which were completely gone.

I think Sarah Palin books were competing with Susan Boyle cd's for being overstocked! They also had a large quantity of Rosanne Cash's auto biography which i almost picked up.

There actually were a number of cool music bios left at 90%, but i just don't have much time for reading these days as much as I enjoy it

I wonder when the sweet spot will be for getting some decent discounts on sci fi and spy novels.

Talks fall through for Books-A-Million to buy 30 Borders stores
July 26, 2011

NEW YORK (AP) — Bookstore chain Books-A-Million Inc. says its last-minute talks to buy the leases and assets of 30 Borders bookstores out of bankruptcy have fallen through.

Borders Group Inc., which filed for bankruptcy protection in February, received court approval last week to liquidate its 399 stores. The chain said at the time it was talking to Books-A-Million about buying 30 store leases and inventory.

But Books-A-Million said Tuesday those talks were unsuccessful.

A group led by liquidation firms Hilco Merchant Resources and Gordon Brothers Group are now holding going-out-of-business stores at all Borders stores.

Birmingham, Ala.-based Books-A-Million operates 231 stores in 23 states and the District of Columbia. Borders is based in Ann Arbor, Mich.

I wonder what happened. I thought it was nice that some people would get to keep their jobs.

Money probably.
They make more by liquidating.

Why Borders Failed While Barnes & Noble Survived

It appears to be all over for the Borders bookselling chain. The company will be liquidated — meaning sold off in pieces — and almost 11,000 employees will lose their jobs. The chain's 400 remaining stores will close their doors by the end of September.

The retailer's first bookstore opened in Ann Arbor, Mich., 40 years ago. Along with competitor Barnes & Noble, Borders pioneered the book megastore business. But Borders made some critical missteps over the years that cost it the business.

The vast tracts of retail space that Borders will soon vacate speak to a gargantuan business that essentially killed itself. At one time, size was its advantage. Borders built a reputation on offering a huge variety of books — tens of thousands of titles in a single store — at a time when most bookstores could afford to stock a fraction of that.

Borders also had an early technical advantage: a superior inventory system that could optimize, and even predict, what consumers across the nation would buy.

But in the mid-1990s, Borders lost its edge.

"It made a pretty big bet in merchandising. [Borders] went heavy into CD music sales and DVD, just as the industry was going digital. And at that same time, Barnes & Noble was pulling back," says Peter Wahlstrom, who tracks Barnes & Noble for the investment research firm Morningstar.

He says Barnes & Noble also invested in beefing up its online sales. Eventually, it also developed its own e-reader, the Nook.

Borders did not. Instead, it expanded its physical plant, refurbished its stores and outsourced its online sales operation to Amazon.

"In our view, that was more like handing the keys over to a direct competitor," Wahlstrom says.

Indeed, outside a Borders bookstore in Arlington, Va., shoppers say they rarely buy books the old-fashioned way.

"I'll go to Borders to find a book, and then I'll to go to Amazon to buy it, generally," customer Jennifer Geier says.

With so many people going online to buy books, Borders lost out. The last time it turned a profit was 2006. In February of this year, it filed for bankruptcy protection.

Those who bemoaned the rise of bookselling giants might see irony in Border's demise. With one of the major players gone, there might be some room, once again, for the little guys.

"I think there are a bunch of different niches around that can still be sustained, but I don't think there's a need for the mass-book seller to be as prevalent or as apparent as they were five or 10 years ago," Wahlstrom says.

Wahlstrom says Borders is disappearing at a time when, as consumers, readers are more empowered than ever. He says he still reads paper books but also reads on his iPhone, computer or tablet.

"Just as I'm probably device agnostic, I am supplier agnostic. I can go online, I can go to Barnes & Noble, I can go to Apple, or I can go to Google. Or I can borrow it from a friend or I can go to a library," he says.

Dan Raff, a management professor at The Wharton School, argues that smaller-town America will suffer from the loss of a chain bookstore.

"The big-box store was a glorious thing while it lasted. To people in many parts of America, they were a kind of Aladdin's cave," Raff says. At Borders, people could access literary variety, contrary to smaller, independent bookstores.

With Barnes & Noble staking its future on digital technology, Raff says, it's likely the big bookstore will only live on in big cities.

For what it's worth, near me there is a half price books across the street from where a Borders closed a few months ago. per the manager of hpb (who I know pretty well), there hasn't been any significant change in sales up or down at the hpb.

I'm surprised they didn't get at least some bump from a major competitor going away.

No kidding. In the Tampa Bay area it seemed that every Borders was within a stones throw of a Barnes & Noble (which were there first) so it's not as if anyone would have to drive further to shop there.

As for Books-A-Million, I always thought of them as underdogs but they might just be the turtle in this race. I hope they stick around because they're the only big book store we've got where I live now.

Not much has changed. This is what I saw in New Hampshire today:

I think the standard 10% is still in place.
Biographies are 20%
Music/CDs are now 30%
DVDs/Blu Rays are still 40%, which in most cases means they're still overpriced.

At the one I went to, everything moved down to 20% off minimum. Now's a decent chance to get 30% off if you're like me and have a Rewards Plus card.

I couldn't find anything though.

I haven't even bothered going considering the lack of decent deals.

Heading out tom'w or Sunday. I got an e-mail that music was up to 40% off, but the store I'll be hitting didn't have much of a selection before. I have a gift card to burn - it's not even mine. A buddy's girlfriend gave it to me just so it would get used.

:D

So, I made the last Borders run - picked up a handful of things. The Pat Benatar autobio, Mary Roach's "Packing For Mars", a UK guitar mag w/Lizzy's "Jailbreak" in it (the real bargain at 40% off), the Van Halen book I think Chris picked up, and a Johan Bruyneel book. The Bruyneel book was in the remainder section marked at 3.99, 20% off, minus 10% for my Borders Rewards Plus, so about 2.90. In the store, I opened it to flip through and found out it was signed. Done deal.

Even though Borders isn't in control now, the trip was a reminder (not needed) of why Borders couldn't compete. Even at 20% off, their prices were only equal to what other stores are doing at best. Some prices were still higher.

And my wife saw a sign that they were hiring.

I went yesterday, and the minimum discount is now 20%, but they did not raise everything up 10%, just the 10% stuff.

I visited a local Borders last weekend, and was mildly amused to see a couple of CD titles in the racks before their proper street date.

And now I get an email stating 25-50% off.
Blu-rays are at 50%.

Do you have to be a Borders member to get the emails about one's local store?
