What do the New York Film Festival and the Rolling Stones have in common? They’re both turning 50 this year, and the festival has decided to fall in line with everyone else saluting the Stones by announcing the World Premiere of ‘The Rolling Stones Charlie Is My Darling – Ireland 1965′ concert film.

The screening will take place Saturday, Sept. 29 at 7PM at the Walter Reade Theatre in New York City. An encore screening will follow at the same theatre Oct. 3 at 8:30PM.

The movie comes from ABKCO Films and has been meticulously restored to showcase the early days of the band. The footage primarily comes from the band’s trip to Ireland in 1965, and provides an intimate, behind-the-scenes diary of life on the road with the band mere weeks after ‘(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction’ hit No. 1 on the charts. The professionally shot video features the frenzy surrounding the band as they were being mobbed at each stop.

Bits and pieces of the footage have surfaced over the years, but it’s never been seen in full film form until now. Included in the movie are the bands travels by train and cab, the cramped basement dressing rooms, impromptu motel room songwriting sessions, and a few future classics being born on the spot.

The film, originally directed by Peter Whitehead and produced by longtime Rolling Stones manager and producer Andrew Loog Oldham, is expected to be broadcast nationally, with an announcement coming soon. In addition, ABKCO Films have set Nov. 6 as the commercial release date. Included in the Super Deluxe Box Set packaging will be the director’s cut, the producer’s cut, and the new 2012 version.

Excellent--I've been patiently awaiting vault material from the Brian Jones era. The title of this movie is familiiar to me for some reason--I guess I assumed it was a bootleg or somehow misremembered it or something. This might be the first of the recent Stones releases for which I will acutally pick up the overpriced, Super Deluxe edition...

I wonder how much actual concert footage there is and how many complete songs. The audio quality and audience screaming is also a factor.

P.S. I'll have to check ticket availability for the NYC screenings. Pretty sure the Walter Reade Theatre is where we saw Rock and Roll Circus when it got its first commercial release.

I wonder if the deluxe set will include a CD of concert recordings from the tour? Does anyone know if this is b&w or colour?

Found a little more info:

On November 6, 2012, ABKCO will release the movie in these three formats:

•DVD
•Blu-ray
•Super deluxe box set that will include a DVD, Blu-ray, 2 CDs and a vinyl LP. The track listing for the CDs and LP are to be announced.

I bought his on video tape years ago when it first came out and rewatched it recently. There are no complete songs. The performance video is nothing special and I really never thought it was a very good film. The discripiton makes it sound more interesting than it really is. Proceed with caution before investing in this one.

Well...it can't be any more boring than "One Plus One"/"Sympathy For The Devil."

Thanks-this is exactly what I had a feeling it was and Abcko have been doing the usual crappy things like that laughable Ya Yas box, so I will not bother with this at all even used.

Is there any way to pick up just the CDs? I don't have a blu-ray or turntable, but I'd love to get the concert recordings.

Abkco snuck out a digital-only release of the Irish show from Charlie My Darling earlier this week. I picked it up on iTunes.

(Sorry DanO)

HD Tracks has it in hi res, but in keeping with Brickwalled Stones it's DR8.
