As I own everyone of these on DVD, I'd need a really good reason to buy this. if you don't already own them, do yourself a favor. There isn't a dog here, all 8 are stone cold essential classics.

Edit: I just looked at the price & almost lost my dinner. Buy the dvd's.............. :sigh:

Several folks have mentioned if you have a region free BR player, it's somewhat cheaper in the UK, though still too much imo.

I got the older collections with all the Universal Frankensteins, Wolfman. Dracula, Creature, the Mummy and Invisable Man.. Also purchased both silent and talkies of Huntchback, Phantom - added Island of Lost Souls - I think I have this covered...too much for only a small sampling of these movies. Add the A&C Meets vid and you have a months worth of great movies.

Hopefully by Christmas we will see this on sale. I have a few that Robert M has mentioned to hold me over.

I just saw some caps DVD Beaver posted comparing the new stand alone blu of Dracula to previous editions. HUGE improvement (based on the caps), but it's not cheap.

You can also get these same 8 movies on DVD at Amazon in two different Universal 4-disc sets, at $14.99 each, which also came out last year 2012, a much better bang for the buck...

Have you seen any comparisons with those transfers compared to the Legacys & the blu's? I've bought all these several times & would only spring for a major upgrade.

I agree, that's a huge pricing difference!

I believe that the DVDs are just the same old discs, while the BDs are new.

I'm watching he restored Wolfman. It's A HUGE upgrade from the Legacy. There's no question they did a restoration. Now if the price was just a bit more reasonable....................

I don't have the money right now, but the UK set is less than 1/2 the USA price: $42.54 delivered. Wonder why this happens so often? I always thought British corporations were just as greedy as American corporations (I'm speaking of whoever owns Universal Films this week; not Amazon)..

Amazon UK has dropped to $37.25 delivered. I SHOULDN'T (financially) but I may bite. I've seen the Wolfman from this set, & it was a big upgrade. I've heard they're all this good; & Dracula especially needs the Upgrade. The Legacy had crap sound, the 75th had awful picture quality.

Don't do this to me Geff. Is this Blu-Ray or standard?

Blu, said to be region free. The identical USA edition is around $80-$90.

WOW, OK, I'll find the bucks for this. These are classic and having grown up with these as a kid they are going to be magnificent on Bu-ray and HD widescreen. Thanks Geff!

Rick A.

PS Ordered via Imwan link.

I got the set. 2 comments:

1. The restoration of Dracula is nothing short of amazing; both video & audio. Blacks now resolve to black instead of noise, & for the first time ever, the original audio track is clearly audible.

2. Now the not so good (& I think the first comment here is why BR has been close to still born other than with enthusiasts):

A. There are so many copy guards, that one has time to get a cup of coffee after selecting an option on the menu due to all the "handshakes" between the copyguards & the hardware.

B. This will only efect a small % of users (like me), but it is SO UNNECESSARY:

I didn't realize this as the Wolfman I originally watched was a ripped copy, but like most Full Screen br's the box is "Window boxed" (has a 20% reduction) on all 4 sides that somehow magically makes it look better on wide screen sets. No big deal as a 20% zoom will fill the screen on a full screen old style set, & with a 30mbs average bit rate it will be unnoticeable on a 480p or 480i. Unfortunately, Both Universal & Paramount defeat the Zoom function with "UOP's" (User operation prohibitions), so those of us with a full screen set lose 20% of the screen real estate for no reason.

Does anyone know if there is an officially stated reason for this by Universal & Paramount (NOT all companies do this) or if it's just a self defeating boneheaded move? What I am complaining about is defeating the zoom option, NOT the window boxing.

I don't see ANY advantage to the manufacturer, & there's certainly a huge (20%) disadvantage to the end user.
