The Beatles' Yellow Submarine to be re-made

September 13, 2009

The Beatles' classic 1968 animated movie Yellow Submarine is set to be remade.

The original film, about a peaceful, music-loving underwater community attacked by music-hating "blue meanies," was originally directed by George Dunning.

The new version, which will be filmed in 3D, will include all 16 Beatles songs and recordings that appeared in the original animated version.

Disney Studios chairman Dick Cook said the new movie will be made by Back To The Future director Robert Zemeckis and will use use the same motion-capture effects as his previous movies, Beowulf and The Polar Express, reports BBC News.

"Yellow Submarine is one of the greatest fantasy films of all time, and making this new 3D performance capture movie is a dream come true for me," said Zemeckis.

"With the latest advances in technology, we will be able to take moviegoers on a voyage unlike any other, and bring new excitement and dimension to Pepperland and the various sea worlds they (The Beatles) encounter."

Hmmm.. Mixed feelings about this- but overall, I think I like it.

Will the Beatles be in it?

Isn't it true that the original movie did not have the Beatles voices?

The Beatles made a cameo appearance at the end of the movie, but their voices were impersonated for the animation.

I watched the DVD just last weekend. No need to be remade. :ohno:

I wonder if that cameo will be included with this new one or will they use CGI. A CGI John? Freaky.

Bad idea. You don't see Disney remaking their own animated classics although they have been known to do some questionable direct-to-video sequels.

Eh. The original will always be available so I've never been upset about a remake.

Yeah, I know, but I'll wait to see some animation before making a judgement. It may end up being a wonderful tribute to the band.

Eh, seeing Zemeckis' previous stuff with this technology I kinda doubt it.

It's a kinda cool tech, but the ending result is not visually appealing.

Yeah, it hasn't been the best. I try to be optimistic about stuff though.

I hope this flops. These needless remakes...

Well, as long as the sheep masses flock to them, Hollywood will continue to make them. :ohno:

This virtually guarantees a Blu-ray with The Beatles' soundtrack songs in hi-rez surround. I'll get it for that alone, even if the movie itself stinks.

I suppose you can just listen to the soundtrack and shut yer TV off, but I'd rather just have Beatle albums in hi-rez surround. And I think even Miss Linda will agree with me and not ban me for saying that! :ohyes:

I have always thought that aside from the music, the original wasn't much either. I remember sitting in the theatre in 1969 thinking how silly it all was. If it hadn't been for the music, I would probably have walked out. I don't know what they think they can do to improve it forty years on.

:Joy: For some reason I never even considered it was underwater, despite the vehicle. The sub was puttering around London too, and that's not underwater. (is it?)

The opening narration states: "Once upon a time... or maybe twice, there was an unearthly paradise called Pepperland. 80,000 leagues beneath the sea, it lay, or lies... I'm not too sure."

For what it's worth. They travel through a series of 'seas' but apparently have no trouble moving and breathing "underwater."

Jeff is too old to be watching Yellow Submarine.
