Great story on the finding of this tape. Seems Bing Crosby had it recorded while in Europe and this tape was found among his possessions after his death. No tape of one of the greatest games ever existed previously so this is a Holy Grail. Glad he had the Hollywood connections for the use of the special equipment pre-VCR days. Will be getting this ASAP!

Is there anyplace on the web where one can get a glimpse of this footage? I'm just curious as to the quality--the "Essential Games Of The Detroit Tigers" set had a game from the '68 World Series that was apparently also a kinescope, and it looks, frankly, awful. It's a shame because actual surviving video from this era looks so real it's almost surreal--the color footage from the 1969 World Series featuring an babyfaced Nolan Ryan pitching for the Mets, for example.

This is amazing - one of the greatest games in history (even from my perspective) and not one strikeout!

Wow - I hadn't noticed the no strikeout thing before.

This DVD is pretty much impossible to get 'round these parts right now. I went to get a copy at B&N w/a coupon Friday, but forgot the coupon. Saturday, they were sold out. Still looking, but watching it off the DVR. First off, the game pace was so much better then - 35 minutes of broadcast and I'm through three innings. Not 47 replays of every foul ball. No batters stepping out to adjust their gloves, clean their spikes, update their Twitter page and check their investments after every pitch. And I still love how the NL and AL umps wore different uniforms. The quality of the print is pretty good for a kinescope, too.

I have read that MLB has apparently edited some of the stuff down - the one I remember is that someone said there's about 40 seconds of set-up cut between the opening and when the Bucs take the field.

One thing I noticed w/the broadcast - and I hope the DVD is NOT like this - when Virdon singled in two runs in the bottom of the second, they showed the reaction in the theater. Cool to see for that, and maybe as an alternate angle on the DVD, but I hope not the only view of the game.

As a Baseball fan as I'm sure you are, some of the announcing at the beginning of an inning sometimes is insightful.

The irony of it is that I get the impression that it was done by somebody who's not a baseball fan. I think you would agree if you or I were in charge we would have done it differently. Thanks for letting me know about the DVD. I'll buy the DVD because it is priceless. But the search is now on for a bootleg copy of the original film in it's entirety including I hope the Gilette and GM commericals.

In the meantime, while these guys bitch about 40 missing seconds, how many other classic World Series games are all but unavailable on DVD because they don't include the Yankees, Mets or Red Sox?

I'd love to see the 1971 World Series released on DVD - I'd be on that in a heartbeat. Those are the first clear baseball memories I have. I remember very little of it, but I can remember two moments clearly - Frank Robinson scoring on a sacrifice fly in game 6, and Jackie Hernandex grabbing a ground ball behind second and throwing to Bob Robertson to finish off game 7. I've seen other plays on video of course, but those two are the only ones I remember actually watching.

I'd love to see the Yanks/Cards the brothers Boyers each picking it at 3rd...Mantle's last WS HR - Joe Pepitone at his best and the greatest pitcher (IMO) of all time Bob Gibson...I'd love all 7 games...
