Product Description
2010 is the 40th Anniversary of the Electric Light Orchestra. ELO was formed in 1970 by Jeff Lynne and Roy Wood from the ashes of The Move. Roy Wood soon left to form Wizzard and Jeff Lynne led ELO on to become one of the biggest selling acts of the seventies and eighties with global album sales in excess of 50 million. This DVD brings together three live concerts from the earlier part of the band's career. The first is a four track excerpt from a show at Brunel University in 1973, the second a longer six track set filmed for the German TV series Rockpalast in 1974 and finally the Fusion concert from the New Victoria Theatre in London in 1976, filmed during the "Face The Music" tour.

Eagle Rock Entertainment, the same company that did the Wembley video, has announced that Electric Light Orchestra "Live - The Early Years" will be released for the first time on DVD on August 9, 2010.

Three live concerts: Four tracks from the 1973 Brunel University (UK) show, eight tracks from the German Rockpalast show (1974), and the legendary Fusion concert in its entirety (London 1976).

A very nice and unexpected surprise indeed!

On 9 August 2010, Eagle Rock Entertainment release "Live - The Early Years" from the Electric Light orchestra [Cat No: EREDV780]. This is the first time any of this material has been released on DVD and only the Fusion show was ever released on VHS. "Live - The Early Years"
features many of their early classics including: "Showdown", "Evil Woman", "Ma-Ma-Ma Belle", "Can't Get It Out Of My Head", "10538 Overture", "Roll Over Beethoven", "Do Ya", "Strange Magic" and more.

2010 marks the 40th Anniversary of the Electric Light Orchestra. The line-ups for these shows were: Jeff Lynne (vocals, guitar), Bev Bevan (drums), Richard Tandy (keyboards), Mik Kaminski (violin), Hugh McDowell (cello), Mike De Albuquerque (bass 73/74), Kelly Groucutt (bass 76), Mike Edwards (cello 73/74), Melvyn Gale (cello 76).

*Brunel** University** 1973*

1) King Of The Universe 2) Ma-Ma-Ma Belle 3) In The Hall Of The Mountain King 4) Great Balls Of Fire

*Germany** 1974 - Rockpalast*

1) Daybreaker 2) Showdown 3) Day Tripper 4) Orange Blossom Special 5) Ma-Ma-Ma Belle 6) In The Hall Of The Mountain King 7) Great Balls Of Fire 8) Roll Over Beethoven

*London** 1976 - Fusion*

1) Poker 2) Nightrider 3) Showdown 4) Eldorado Overture 5) Can't Get It Out Of My Head 6) Poor Boy (The Greenwood) 7) Illusions In G Major
8) Strange Magic 9) 10538 Overture 10) Do Ya 11) Evil Woman 12) Ma-Ma Ma Belle 13) Roll Over Beethoven

Clocking in at nearly two hours of great entertainment and featuring an interview from the 'Rockpalast' TV series as a bonus feature, "Live - The Early Years" is a great package. The DVD makes the perfect companion piece to Eagle's Gold selling "Out Of The Blue:
Live at Wembley" DVD (EREDV058 & Special Edition EREDV556).

Wha-the-who?

Worth it for the Fusion concert alone.

I would've loved to have seen pre-New-World-Record ELO in concert.

Right now, it's a UK only with a pending US release as well. I also heard the US release might have a different set list. I'm hoping it's a Region 0 so if there is a different set for the US, I'll get both.

So far, IP, that is the UK version. There might be a different version for the US, although I would love this version also.

Bump: added pre-order details for the domestic release to the first post. The USA tracklisting has three less songs than what are supposed to be included on the UK release. (Also note that the UK video is currently scheduled to be encoded as Region 2, not Region 0.)

Leaving out Roll Over Beethoven on both concerts in the US version is a crime.

And, no 'Fire On High' ?? Shame, I know they used to play it live around that time (I am certain I heard it on the New World Record tour, at any rate)

I know...Fire on High is on the Live at Winterland CD. A great opportunity to really show some great live ELO, but I guess what little we have is better than nothing. :sigh:

It must be a royalty issue. It is not uncommon for a Euro release to contain cover tracks that are not available on the US versions. I recall this happening with The Who at The BBC CD. The Euro version has an unedited version of Shakin' All Over/Spoonful and the US version omits Spoonful. I remember reading (probably in ICE) that the royalty rate is much higher in the US so the label decides to edit releases to save money.

I remember that issue as well - it's apparently cheaper and easier to license the tracks in other countries than in the US. Ironically, I picked up a copy of the UK version of the Who's BBC set in London cheaper than when I bought it new in the US.

Video is an entirely different issue, it seems. As I understand it, you can release an audio cover of a song w/o the owner's permission, but you pay a set rate that is higher than if you can reach an agreement. So, the owner can't stop you from covering a tune, but you pay a bit more for the privilege. Apparently, there is no equal provision for a video performance. A Michael Hedges show was supposed to be released on video shortly after his death, but (as the story goes), the estate couldn't get licensing for one song, and they didn't want to edit it out of the set. Hedges' manager hinted at what track it was, but obviously wouldn't come out and say which one, but I'd have rather had an incomplete set instead of nothing, which is what we got.

I got this last night and popped it in. This is a great DVD. OK, so Roll Over Beethoven is missing twice, not a big deal to me. I have the bootleg version of Fusion, and it's on there. The picture quality is amazing and they sound great. Here's hoping they release more live ELO from their heyday. I have recently fallen in love with On The Third Day, so I'm loving these early shows.
