This is the COOLEST R&R Cult movie of all time, & as a bonus you get to see a young Diane Lane without clothes (hopefully they're releasing the uncensored version. Due to the quoted age below that may not be possible with US laws). Also (I think) was Laura Dern's first film. . It pisses me off how much I've spent on several boot copies (each time hoping for better quality) but I WILL be buying this. This actually features music from The Tubes Fee Waybill & Vince Welnick, & from the Clash off shoot "The Professionals". The movie's main point is a much deserved criticism of early MTV & the mainstream media done rock style. Quote: From Michael Cotton of the Tubes:

From "USA Today"
Coming attractions: 'Fabulous Stains' comes to DVD
By Edna Gundersen, Steve Jones and Bill Keveney Music
Please welcome 'The Fabulous Stains' to DVD
Long a cult favorite of punk and rock aficionados, Ladies and Gentlemen, The Fabulous Stains will finally surface on DVD. The 1981 film, shelved after a brief theatrical run, arrives Sept. 16 to inaugurate Rhino's Rock 'n' Roll Cinema series.
Starring 16-year-old Diane Lane as a riot grrl prototype, Stains also stars Laura Dern, Ray Winstone and Christine Lahti. Steve Jones and Paul Cook of the Sex Pistols, Clash bassist Paul Simonon, Fee Waybill of The Tubes and punk hero Black Randy also pop up in the movie, directed by music mogul Lou Adler. Lane, rocking a skunk coif, belts A Waste of Time as female fans chant "We don't put out!" Stains inspired rockers from L7 and Bikini Kill to Courtney Love as it found an afterlife on bootlegs, cable and the art-house film circuit.

We're getting closer; it's up on Amazon! [title]LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, THE FABULOUS STAINS[/title] never received a formal theatrical release and was only seen on late-night cable, poor-quality bootlegs, or on rare occasions at film festivals. Yet somehow this 1981 film about a trio of misfit teenage girls who start a punk band went on to inspire a generation of female rockers.
SHE CAN'T FOOL ALL THE FANS ALL OF THE TIME . . .
Recently orphaned Corrine Third Degree Burns (a 14-year-old Diane Lane) enlists her cousin (Laura Dern) and sister (Marin Kanter) to launch a punk rock band, The Stains. Three rehearsals later, The Stains score the opening slot on a cross-country tour with aging metal act The Metal Corpses (led by Fee Waybill of The Tubes) and British punk rockers The Looters (real-life punk pioneers Paul Simonon from The Clash and Steve Jones and Paul Cook of the Sex Pistols). The Stains' meteoric rise (and equally lightning-quick fall) owes more to TV exposure than to talent. http://www.amazon.com/dp/B001B94JWE/?tag=imwan-20

OK folks, this is getting downright weird. According to Ryko distribution, the soundtrack is also coming out, but ON VINYL ONLY! There website & email shows NO cd release......... The DVD is still on. http://www.rykodistribution.com/artist_ ... a_id=27438

What perked up my curiosity is Rhino's press release, calling LAGTFS "The first title in Rhino's Rock 'N' Roll Cinema Series". What other hard-to-find titles might be forthcoming? "Get Crazy"? "One Trick Pony"? "Janis--The Way She Was"? "Let's Spend The Night Together"?
(Or I could get really crazy here--"Renaldo And Clara"? "Let It Be"? "Cocksucker Blues"?)
In other words, I'll be awfully disappointed if the next entry in the series is a deluxe edition of "Streets Of Fire".

Do you have a link to Rhino's press release (assuming it's different then what Ryko wrote)?

http://www.rhino.com/store/ProductDetai ... HInews0808Quote: Rhino puts out! The first title in Rhino's Rock 'N' Roll Cinema Series, LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, THE FABULOUS STAINS, is a cult favorite that received only an extremely limited theatrical release in 1981. Since then, it has surfaced occasionally (at best) at film festivals and on TV, but has never been released on home video or DVD - until now. With Rhino's revival of this lost classic about a trio of misfit teenaged girls who start a punk band and find nationwide fame - a tale that inspired a generation of female rockers including Bikini Kill, L7 and Courtney Love - an infamous film is finally ready for its close up.
Notably, the movie spotlights a sexy, surly fifteen-year old Diane Lane in one of her first starring roles, and she's unforgettable as The Stains lead singer and archetypal “riot grrl” Corinne Burns. Sporting an eye-popping skunk hairdo, she sings songs including "I'm A Waste Of Time," verbally assaults the audience and leads her adoring female fans in the chant, “We don't put out!” Laura Dern is a Stains band mate, and Steve Jones and Paul Cook of The Sex Pistols, Clash bassist Paul Simonon, Fee Waybill of the Tubes and Black Randy from Black Randy and The Metrosquad are among the real life musicians with roles in the film. Cast members also include David Clennon, Christine Lahti and Ray Winstone.
LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, THE FABULOUS STAINS was directed the legendary record producer and music business manager Lou Adler, whose other directorial feature film credit is Cheech & Chong's Up In Smoke. The title's DVD debut features the film restored from original vault elements as well as special new audio commentaries from Adler, Diane Lane and Laura Dern.
Colored/ Running Time: 88 mins/ Rated R

Thanks, I was looking for info on the LP. Looks like there's no mention of the LP on their site.

I'm hoping there'll be a delayed cd........ I haven't been able to find any written statement as to why vinyl only.
The Professionals were actually a real band. Their tracks from the film (or very similar versions) are on their UK cd's. But I'd like to have the Tubes stuff on cd, & actually the fake MTV Stains version of Join The Professionals is quite good for what it is: It would have likely been a hit on MTV.

The vinyl release appears to have been cancelled ~ the listing page linked to above has vanished from Amazon's site. Now they have a placemarker for a CD version of the soundtrack, no release date or other details shown yet: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B001AQRXTE/?tag=imwan-20

And just to further confuse the issue, there is a far more detailed listing for the soundtrack album in Amazon's MP3 department. Trouble is, the release date says September 2nd but it's still not out and can't be pre-ordered or even sampled: 1. All Washed Up [Rock] Lawn Boy 3:55 2. Professionals The Looters 3:18 3. Roadmap Of My Tears The Metal Corpses 3:39 4. La La La The Looters 3:49 5. Curfew Lawn Boy 4:46 6. Waste Of Time The Stains 2:24 7. All Washed Up [Reggae] Lawn Boy 4:41 8. Professionals The Stains 3:46 9. Don't Blow It All Away The Looters 3:37 10. Conned Again The Looters 3:15 11. Professionals [Video Version] The Fabulous Stains 3:12 http://www.amazon.com/dp/B001EJBSCA/?tag=imwan-20(I hope that the problems they're having with the release of the soundtrack doesn't mean there's going to be a problem with the DVD release too ...)

Picked mine up at Best Buy today (I had a gift card). It's weird to see this in non bootleg quality! A quick peek on my pc seemed to show excellent picture quality. Here's a few tidbits:
1. It's in widescreen (16X9), all the boots I've seen are fullscreen
2. The shower scene does not appear to be cut; it's actually not all that explicit, though Running time is the same as the boots.
3. Only extras are 2 commentaries: 1 from Lane & Dern, & 1 from Adler. I've seen this so many time I'm tempted to play the Lane/Dern commentary when I watch it. The short U-Tube featurettes are NOT on here.
4. No sign of the LP or cd so far. The film credits mentions a soundtrack on Ode Records (Adler's label). I don't remember seeing a soundtrack when it came out.

Geff R says "The film credits mentions a soundtrack on Ode Records (Adler's label). I don't remember seeing a soundtrack when it came out."
I agree Geff, I thought the same thing myself when I saw this in the credits.. I would have bought this if this came out. I was able to find the original "Valley Girl" on vinyl with Nick Cage and the female lead on the front cover. I believe I would have found the Stains as well since I love this flick.
Rhino did a great job in the remastering of film by the way for the curious.

For those who don't know, reality imitated film; there are 2 cd's by a band called the Professionals. Both include the song from this film, though Ray Winstone has nothing to do with the real band (Steve Jones, Paul Cook & a bass player named Andy Allan. I just discovered there finally was a US release of an 11 tracker last year, but this import is the one to get: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00005J9M5/?tag=imwan-20BTW, a very quick review: The Dern/Lane commentary is really entertaining, though they got a couple facts wrong (Called Vince Welnick the Tubes bass player for one), & the Adler was so boring I gave up after 20 minutes. Nice transfer on the film though; I saw several details I'd never noticed on the boots.

Watching this today. The film looks good but the story is kind of meh (typical teen angst). It seems the movie is telling us that getting on TV is a good thing no matter how you do it (playing bad music). The big attraction is seeing a young Diane Lane looking awesome. She was one the best looking teen actors ever. That slight nude scene is pretty revealing. Its great to know that Diane has continued to be a great actor.
The music of The Stains is pretty bad, in fact all the music in the movie is pretty bad but its cool to see members of the Tubes/ The Clash and The Sex Pistols in the movie. Ray Winestone of Beiuwolf fame is pretty good as the lead singer of the faux British band.
Worth a rental.

Perhaps you would have had to have been there when it came out, I consider this the 2nd best R&R cult film ever after Rocky Horror.

btw...the best thing in the movie is the very end where the group performs in what appears to be a music video to "The Professionals". They look great and that song is catchy. In the commentary, Diane calls it her "Rumblefish" look. Well that look is hot!

Drove Matt Dillions character crazy (and me too!). :} Love the Stains flick, had a video of it for years and this transfer is excellent! Does anyone know what's next up for Rhino's Rock & Roll movies? Hopefully they will release "Stardust", the David Essex film with Dave Edmunds, Keith Moon and others. Rick A.
