Ken Burns is releasing his "Baseball" series again as "Fully Restored in High Definition" in both DVD and Blu-ray formats on June 8, 2021. Currently the DVD is $68.99 and the Blu-ray is $89.99 on Amazon.

DVD:

Blu-ray:

My local PBS station is also showing the restored version starting this Saturday, April 3rd. I don't think this is a network-wide broadcast, so your station may not be showing it.

I'll have to look for that. I'll get the BD set eventually. I loved that series. My daughter was still a toddler when it first aired, and she just fell in love w/Buck O'Neill. He'd come on the screen and she'd say "Buck O'Neill" and was just transfixed the whole time he talked.

I got to meet him a year or two later. What a great guy, and a great storyteller.

What a great story about your daughter! Buck O'Neill was excellent in that series and it's lovely that you got to meet him, too.

He did a book signing at a local bookstore (now gone, I believe). I told my wife I was going to go, get my book signed, listen to him talk to people for 10-15 minutes and get home. It was one of those nights where I was a little tired and didn't really feel like going out, but it was an opportunity I couldn't pass up. Got to the store, walked in, and there are about 20 people just sitting around the section, and Buck was just sitting in a chair telling stories and answering questions. Finally, someone from the bookstore came over and said, "I hate to do this, but if we don't start getting things signed, we're going to run out of time." That's when it hit me that I'd been there over an hour, and I think he'd signed maybe one thing - everybody was just listening to him. What a great night.

I'm seeing a lot of complains about this due to the aspect ratio. Images had to be cropped to fit the original 4:3 ratio on a 16:9 widescreen. To his credit, Burns was involved and it's not sloppily done, but lots of people are wishing they just would have done the HD scan and left it in the original 4:3 ratio. Years ago there was a World at War set that was "upgraded" to 16:9, but it was done so poorly and had so many complaints that a 4:3 HD version was later released. If you are an aspect ratio stickler, you might want to wait on this one because there might be a pretty decent chance that a 4:3 HD version sees the light of day.
