Description
Nicolas Roeg’s iconic science fiction odyssey, The Man Who Fell to Earth, has been stunningly restored in 4k to mark the 40th anniversary of this cult classic.

Featuring a startling and era - defining lead performance from David Bowie in his debut feature role and based on the cult novel by Walter Tevis, The Man Who Fell to Earth endures as, not only a bitingly caustic indictment of the modern world but, also, a poignant commentary on the loneliness of the outsider.

Thomas Jerome Newton (David Bowie) is a humanoid alien who comes to Earth from a distant planet on a mission to take water back to his home planet in the midst of a catastrophic drought. Using the advanced technology of his home planet to patent many inventions on Earth, Newton acquires incredible wealth as the head of a technology-based conglomerate (aided by leading patent attorney Oliver Farnsworth Buck Henry, The Graduate) that he intends to use to finance the construction of a space vehicle to ship water back to his planet.

Newton embarks on a relationship with hotel maid Mary-Lou (Candy Clark American Graffiti) and makes progress with the construction of his vehicle but soon finds his true identify at risk via his roguish colleague and confident Dr. Nathan Bryce (Rip Torn Men in Black) who threatens not only his relationship with Mary-Lou, but his freedom and chances of ever returning home.

The restored movie was released to UK theatres and home video last year. Now the above Limited Collector's Edition package is available in the USA, too.

Also make note of the soundtrack album, which was released as a 2CD set back in September:

I wonder if the Lionsgate is actually higher quality then the Criterion?

The main feature from the Criterion missing from the new release is the commentary track with Nicolas Roeg, David Bowie and Buck Henry.

As usual, DVDBeaver does a pretty thorough breakdown of the various releases. Not sure if there's a clear winner, though. :|

You perceived the writing on DVD Beaver differently then I did. I read that the Lionsgate video transfer is inferior to the Criterion.

I'm sticking with my Criterion. The commentary track is worth the price of admission right there.

I missed the Criterion Blu-ray, which is now out of print. I have the Criterion edition on DVD and also on laserdisc (for which the commentary track was originally recorded). In case anyone is curious, the commentary track is available on YouTube. David says he got as far as writing a soundtrack and some of it ended up on both "Low" and "Station to Station". Most tracks on "Low" sound like movie scores anyway, but I wonder which tracks from "Station to Station" had originally been intended for the movie. A few guesses: "TVC 15" for that scene in which Thomas is in front of many TV sets. "Stay" for the moment when Mary Lou says she doesn't want "Tommy" to return to his planet. And the cover version of "Wild is The Wind" might have been intended for that scene in which Thomas says "I wanna hear people sing" and Roy Orbison's "Blue Bayou" is heard instead. The "soundtrack" featurette on the recente release says nothing about any song from "Station to Station" being from the discarded soundtrack, but who knows?

Nicholas Pegg gets into that in his very Thorough Bowie book; I don't remember what his conclusions were.

I have this book on Kindle, so I did a quick search. He does mention that "TVC 15" might have been inspired by that scene of the movie, but otherwise his references to the discarded soundtrack point to "Low", including the bonus tracks "All Saints" and "Some Are" and an unreleased track called "Wheels".
