Journey return to Japan for a very special concert filmed at Budokan. This concert film captures the iconic rock band recreating their legendary albums Escape and Frontiers, in an explosive rare performance. Opening with the iconic "Don't Stop Believin'", the band rips through a 2-hour set featuring songs such as "Who's Crying Now", "Separate Ways" and "Faithfully". After the close of their performance of Frontiers, Journey returns to the stage to perform two blistering extended encores.

is this the real journey, or the tribute band?

hard to tell by the setlist, not a single post-perry song on there. so it could be either band.

It was recorded in 2017, that should tell you which band it is.

The real Journey, which happens to be the current Journey..... Neal Schon, Ross Valory, Steve Smith, Jonathan Cain & Arnel Pineda.

Schon & Valory started the band in '73. Smith came along in '78 (left and came back). Cain arrived in 1980.

Yes, this is the real Journey with 4/5 of the classic lineup.

There are plenty of tribute bands to go see, or you can see the real band which is this one.

Why the hell would new material be on this when it’s two vintage albums in full???

They wouldn’t be playing new songs with Perry either!

You want Perry, go play his AC schlock which fell off the charts immediately and enjoy it.

you see no problem with schon touring as journey and playing ALL the songs that steve perry made famous. it really and truly bothers me that he does this. and the best part is that he did it in japan, i wonder how many people there even knew perry wasn't with them anymore?

would you have a problem with perry touring as journey and playing all the same journey songs with his own band and no other members of journey past or present?

as i said before, neal schon should send steve perry flowers every day for the rest of his life, and say a little thank you prayer to perry every time he starts his maserati. cause without perry he is still playing in a santana cover band or even worse in bad english.

I think Perry still gets an equal share of Journey's touring revenue, so he has no financial worries.

Without Neal Schon there would have been no Journey, period. That simple people.

I've removed one line from a post by Renny upthread because of how it could have been (and by a couple of you, was) interpreted. So that's gone along with the specific responses to it.

I've left all the rest of Renny's comments about what constitutes a fake Journey, or a real Steve Perry.

Renny, you shoot your own argument in the foot. Using your hypothetical, we're not talking about one former member of Journey touring with 4 other non-Journey members/alumni as Journey -- a situation many would see as illegitimate.

And this isn't "Schon touring as Journey", either, but a band consisting of 4/5 of the Escape/Frontiers lineup with a different vocalist. Perry hasn't been a functioning part of Journey in 20 years.

And frankly, the international audience is probably more aware of Arnel Pineda than many US concert attendees.

Then again, this topic isn't really a discussion of legitimacy, is it? At this point your Perry v. Journey posts are just base-level trolling.

I'm not a huge Journey fan in the least, really only loving Open Arms, Don't Stop Believin', and a handful of others, but even I've always associated Journey with Steve Perry first and foremost, and if he's not a part of it then I wouldn't consider them Journey either.

sure, each album subsequently sold a little more than the last one. kind of a non-latin santana, if you will. kind of prog, kind of rock, it was an eclectic mix of tunes for sure. all 3 albums are pretty good, albeit a showcase for how fast neal schon can play, but it was his vehicle to drive, from what i've read over the years

perry just catapulted them to the stratosphere..

here is a setlist from march of 78, 'escape' came out in january of 78. they did play some tunes from the first 3 albums when perry first came on board, interesting.:

today they play a song, once in a while, not always, from their post-perry albums, but almost all setlists are perry songs. and he gets money form that and that is good.

but like i always said, if they only played songs from their albums since perry left, it wouldn't take very long before no one would go see them anymore, especially at the prices they charge.
