Description
CHICAGO: THE TERRY KATH EXPERIENCE is a documentary about a daughter discovering the legacy of her father: the late Terry Kath. Kath was one of the founding members of the band Chicago, whose powerful guitar playing and husky, melodic voice has been praised by such icons as Jimi Hendrix, Joe Walsh and Eric Clapton. Before discovering his full potential as a guitar icon, Kath’s life ended tragically at age 32. Terry's daughter Michelle was just two years old when he passed, only knowing him through his music and stories from her mother. After discovering a box of memorabilia, Michelle sets out on a journey to get to know her father and to search for his iconic lost guitar. In this documentary, Michelle interviews her dad's family, bandmates and good friends, as well as prominent musicians, to piece together the life of Terry Kath, one of the great unsung rock legends of the 1970s. CHICAGO: THE TERRY KATH EXPERIENCE was directed and produced by Michelle Kath Sinclair, and was produced by Jordan Levy and Tony Papa. This video features raw and uncut bonus material with behind-the-scenes moments on Michelle’s journey as well as clips that did not make the final cut, including Michelle's backstage concert meet up with Chicago, a candid look at the interview with Michelle and her mother Camelia, an exclusive look at the Chicago members as they share stories about living with Terry Kath, bonus footage from Michelle and Camelia’s visit to Caribou Ranch and a special compilation of Terry Kath's 8mm home footage with commentary. English subtitles are available for the deaf and hearing-impaired.

According to Amazon's current listings above, this home video will be available as a factory-pressed DVD in standard definition, and as a burned BD-R in high definition.

Typical for FilmRise that the Blu-ray is BD-R. And, maddeningly, on past FilmRise releases the special features generally appear only on a DVD-R and/or BD-R special edition and not on the barebones pressed DVD disc (e.g., the Tower Records documentary, For The Love Of Spock, etc.). But that may not be the case here based upon the listing for the pressed DVD showing bonus features. Will be interested to see how it pans out.

Not to thread-crap too much, but does anyone have experience with BD-R titles? Do we know if they'd hold up better or worse than DVD-R?

No experience w/the BD-R, but I'm gun-shy after my only DVD-R experience. Bought "Garfunkel And Oates" (Oates!) last year as a lightning deal. Played disc one - crapped out in the middle of the third or fourth episode. Looked at the back - looked like about half the disc was used. Notified Amazon, they sent a replacement. Same issue. Notified them again, they said they had a bad shipment and contacted the manufacturer. They refunded my money and said I could order it again when the new shipment came in - but it was at the regular price. So I didn't get it. Was kind of hoping it would be a sale this year, but no luck.

My understanding is we don't know yet. The best resource for burned disc quality that I know of is a board here:

https://club.myce.com/

I can tell you that dvd-r & cdr quality has significantly gone downhill in the last 3 years or so. There are no burned dvdr's or cdr's I can recommend at this time.

I always recommend that anyone who pays for a burned disc backs it up to at least 1 hard drive.

The Amazon listing now confirms that the DVD is also burned not pressed.

I’ll wait and see what the verdict is on this one. Maybe it will show up on Netflix.

Thanks for keeping an eye on the listing, Jay.

Now we need confirmation from an ICEr who purchased this as to whether it turned out to be a DVD or a DVD-R.

For the previous Chicago release (thread here), FilmRise at least did offer a manufactured DVD with a later release date. But if burned discs are all that FilmRise intends to put out now, I won't post their releases at all anymore.

I might buy this were it a legit pressed disc, DVD or blu, but now I'd rather just watch it online or on Smiff's cable.

Looks like I'll be inviting myself over in the near future.

Disappointing. I would've gone for this if it had've been pressed. Oh, well.

To those quibbling over format: Forget it. This plays and looks just fine on my equipment.

You don't want to miss this heart-stirring documentary. I don't think it could've been done any better than this.

Agree, we will be all dead and buried before the DVD has playback issues. Hell, I have early 80's VHS tape that plays back really well. :ohyes:

If people want to await a Netflix showing that's a different subject. I have many CD's that are burnt 'on-demand' and haven't had a issue yet.

I'm glad I saw it on TV. I enjoyed it. I can't imagine playing it again, so even if it was pressed unless there's significant bonus, I would have passed. Definately won't buy burned blu until more is known about longevity & media life.

So do you believe you will live to be 100? God Bless you!

But as for the content, some of these docs (unlike great film) are maybe a once or twice viewing, speaking for myself that is.

I've seen lower quality burned dvdr-s go bad from fading dye in less than 2 months (Maxells made by Ricoh Japan). Afaik, no one knows about the longevity of burned blu's yet. It could be a year, it could be 10 years, etc. Also, pretty much all of the quality dvdr manufacturers are gone. Even TY was bought by CMC; who is considered one of the worst.

I understand, but it's kind of like 'life expectancy' and it's all it unsuspected increments. Damm, I don't want to be sounding morbid. All I am saying is enjoy every day or better yet as the great Warren Zevon, "Enjoy every sandwich".

Finally watched this the other night - it's a damn shame this isn't getting a full pressed BD/DVD release. I'd love to own it, but I don't see myself paying for a burn-on-demand copy. I thought it was beautifully done.
