FYI - two more days left on the subscription and to get the Bonus Disc. And they announce what the contents of disc and the first release in this year's series. Clipped below from an email received...it did go up in price from the original pricing (see link if interested)

Dave's Picks 2015 Subscription Period Ends Thursday

There are only two days left to become a 2015 Dave's Picks subscriber! Subscriptions will come to end on Thursday, January 22nd at 11:59 PM PST. We checked in with archivist David Lemieux to see if he had any new details on what's to come and here's what he had to say:
"We're really thrilled to reveal that Dave's Picks Vol. 14, another complete show in the series, is from the majestic (and highly sought-after!) gig on March 26, 1972 at the Academy Of Music in New York City. In addition to powerful workouts on the usual 1972 jamming vehicles "The Other One" and "Good Lovin'," this show features the prototype of what would be become the typical Europe '72 setlist a couple of weeks later. Our 2015 Dave's Picks subscribers' Bonus Disc (available for only a couple of more days if you subscribe) is drawn from a couple of other unreleased nights at the Academy Of Music during the Dead's week-long run before they left for Europe."

We're heeding the call for more of the majestic early 70s! No doubt, this was a time of great exploration and innovation for the Grateful Dead, one of their peaks... And so it is with great pleasure, that we are proud to present the official release of Winterland, February 24, 1974.

On the fertile grounds of their home turf and on the edge of what would become the Wall of Sound era, the Dead embarked upon a tremendous three-night run at Winterland. On this particular night, the last in the run, they warmed up the crowd with stellar new tracks "U.S. Blues" (previously known as "Wave That Flag"), "Ship of Fools," and "It Must Have Been The Roses." And while these debuts, nestled among fan favorites like "Playing In The Band" and "Brown-Eyed Women," were quite tantalizing, the 2nd set really brought it all home. Witness the magic on an incredibly jazz, introspective "Dark Star," perhaps one of the finest version of "Morning Dew" during this time, and a beautifully arranged cover of "It's All Over Now Baby Blue." The moments making up this masterpiece are made even more clear by the crispness of Kidd Candelario's recording. Epic, indeed!

Limited to 16,500 individually numbered copies, Dave's Picks Volume 13: Winterland, San Francisco, CA - 2/24/74 has been mastered to HDCD specs by Jeffrey Norman and features illustrations by our 2015 Artist in Residence Micah Nelson (learn more about the multi-talented artist and musician in our upcoming All In The Family piece).

Received...listened to disc 1 - I like...but the cover...perhaps the worst of the lot. Though, I will need to compare again just to make sure.
OK, I saw my shadow, probably the last string of posts for six weeks or so.

Just got done listening to the show. I really enjoyed it. Thought the set list was top notch and the band was definitely in fine form. Donna's off key vocals on Playing In The Band were a bit of bummer.

Is Donna EVER on key on PITB? I usually don't make sexist comments, but in Donna's case, why else was she in the Dead...................? It certainly wasn't SINGING talent!

Geoff...I thought the same thing...did she ever get it right.
I guess she wandered on the stage one night while hubby played keyboards and just started and the boys just let her be :D
She does a nice job on the rare occasions they pulled out sunrise...but she certainly does herself no favors when she pulls a "Janis" during PITB

I almost felt guilty for ripping on Donna again, I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who felt that way when they heard the discs.

Donna was the one who introduced Keith to Jerry as their "next Keyboardist". By all accounts, Keith was a very quiet and shy guy and Donna was his advocate. Here is a great article on the subject:

Donna is actually a good singer....................she was part of the Muscle Shoals scene and sang backup on many recordings including Elvis Presley. She just had trouble hearing in live settings.

I saw the K&D band after they left the Dead. Not good. Hunter opened for them & he was much better (I still have a soundboard of Hunter's portion of that show Hunter let me make)

That also reminds me of an interesting story:

At that time Hunter was doing a duo with a bass player named Larry (I'm intentionally leaving out his last name) who was incredible in that setting (he played "lead bass").I can't overstate how good the guy was with Hunter. I all but idolized the guy's playing for years, based on that tape. Years later I was surprised to find myself playing with Larry in a top 40 band. He couldn't learn other bass player's parts & I had to fire him. REALLY ironic........................

No doubt. I think when the material is right for her - such as Sunrise, she does a very good job. Its about knowing ones' range, I guess. I kiddingly diss her - she was with the band during some of my favorite years, and as mentioned she did bring Keith into the fold...IMO the most talented of the keyboard players.

I'd agree about Keith (though from a purely technical pov, Vince Welnik was better, but I never heard him with the Dead, only with The Tubes), but I really strongly don't like Donna's voice.

Finally had a chance to listen to my copy - Thought the first half of the show was kind of plodding, lacking of fire. The second half they got it in gear. The band must have had a couple of "helpers" during the intermission to help get them in the right frame of mind.

Super beyond pissed off - somebody stole this one out of my mail box. Found it in three pieces strewn over my and my neighbors lawn yesterday.

I unfortunately felt the need 15 years ago to pay for a po box for that reason.

My condolences. What a world we live in.
