Looks to be about 99% vinyl, as usual.

Interestingly, the Sonic Cathedral label used their own RSD announcement to point out the issues they have with the entire concept:

Quote:
Record Store Day 'is dying', say independent labels

Independent labels Sonic Cathedral and Howling Owl have announced details of a new split release, one copy of which will be released every day for the next year as a sort-of boycott to Record Store Day.

The release in question features tracks by Spectres and Lorelle Meets The Obsolete, limited to just 365 copies. A statement posted to the Sonic Cathedral website list their motive as trying to illustrate "how every day should be record store day" and that the current Record Store Day "rules and regulations" mean that it's "not beneficial to small, backs to the wall labels".

Read the full statement below:

"We are releasing one copy a day for a whole year via selected shops and Recordstoredayisdying.com to make some sort of point about how every day should be record store day, and because it seemed like an amusing, foolhardy thing to do. Make no mistake, though, this is not a protest against record shops, because we love record shops (some copies of this record will actually be available in them). It’s not even really a protest against Record Store Day, which is essentially a good idea, or was when it began in 2007, even if it is far too focused on ‘product’ rather than the actual shop spaces and their role in the communities they serve."

"If it’s a protest against anything, it’s what Record Store Day has become: just another event in the annual music industry circus that begins with the BBC Sound Of… list and ends with the Mercury Prize, co-opted by major labels and used as another marketing stepping stone, like an appearance on ‘Later… With Jools Holland’ or bagging the sunset slot at Glasto. If you want to queue up from the early hours of April 18 to buy Mumford & Sons’ 7” or an overpriced Noel Gallagher 12” to flip on eBay, then fine, but what the hell has it got to do with us? U2 have already shat their album into our iTunes, why should they constipate the world’s pressing plants with it too? And there’s a picture disc of A-ha’s ‘Take On Me’ as well. Of course it’s a fine pop single, but there’s bound to be a copy in the Oxfam around the corner."

"No, because of the rules and regulations (minimum pressing amounts, no direct to customer sales, blah blah blah) Record Store Day really isn’t fun, and it’s certainly not beneficial to small, backs to the wall labels like Sonic Cathedral and Howling Owl. But we are still affected by it. Badly. There are currently no copies of Spectres’ album ‘Dying’ on vinyl in the shops because the repress is somewhere towards the back of the queue after some Foo Fighters studio scrapings, a host of EPs by The 1975 and about a million heavyweight ‘heritage rock’ reissues that no-one really needs. Less Cheap Trick, more bloody expensive con."

"The final irony was getting a call to say that this very 7” was going to be delayed and might not be shipped until after Record Store Day. We’ve switched plants, and fingers crossed they will appear on time for the first copy to go on sale on April 18. If they don’t, well, there are 364 other days on which to buy and release records…"

Record Store Day, which celebrates the culture of independent record shops, takes place in 2015 on April 18. Mumford and Sons and Foo Fighters are among the artists who will release exclusive material this year.

You're not kidding. The good news is that the trend seems to be that most of the coolest LP's eventually make there way to general cd release.

I'll be on for the three Jeff Beck singles, and the Hendrix Atlanta Pop single. Soon as I can find them online.

Relax. It will be available from Amazon third party sellers forever, like all the other RSD releases in history. :)

"British Invasion" = Stones, Zeppelin, Arctics, Pistols. Sure, that works.

Let's sticky this thread through tomorrow night.

I may be one of the few people who can still play a cassette tape. :)

The Stephen Hawking "Galaxy Song" single is probably top of the list. Carcass "Choice Cuts" is a possibility. Johnny Cash "Koncert v Praze" for the right price because it's in the complete box set. The Garbage "Chemicals" 10". Flaming Lips have a handful of things. I want to check out the Mastodon 12". If I find Metallica at the right price, I'll probably grab that. I will almost definitely grab the Rocky Horror EP, the Todd Snider 7" and the St. Paul And The Broken Bones 12" if I find them. And I would like to see the Brian May vinyl and the Zappa 7". Oh, and because it's the original mono, I may look for the Doors "Strange Days". But I'll also be budgeting myself.

And looking at what previous RSD releases have been marked down...

There wasn't a lot on this year's list I wanted. Still the crowd was the biggest I've seen on past RSD's and the line started at Landlocked at 4 AM!

But I did pick up the Courtney Barnett "Kim's Caravan" 12" single with an unreleased John Cale cover b-side and the Emitt Rhodes "How Can You Mend A Broken Heart" cover from the 7' b/w a Chris Price exclusive. The Rhodes single is from an upcoming Bee Gees tribute album. I still need to get the Robert Plant live EP and Beefheart live album. I might get the Midlake live album, it looked good. More local record shops participated this year and did so in a bigger, better way than I expected. I'll check them out later as I have people who'll hopefully put aside what I'm looking for.

That Doors lp sounds interesting for fans and collectors. Did you guys see a lot of the Metallica cassette in stores? I didn't bother going out.

I still have at least one store to hit after dinner, but I've seen none of the Metallica. One place apparently had them and sold out. Another place I may stop did not list it in their bounty.

I went to couple indies today and yeah, the stores were very crowed today. Great to see.

Picked up The Zombies "RIP", The Doors "Strange Days" in MONO, Temples 12" and Blue Mountain Eagle. All Record Store exclusives.

Saw the Metallica cassettes, Plant Live, a cool Suede lp and some cool Jeff Beck picture sleeve singles.

Wow - not in this lifetime!

The store I hit after dinner had one of the Metallica cassettes, but it sold to the third person in the door.

From what I heard, turnout was very good today. There was a variety of stuff at each of the four stores I hit - each store had something none of the others had. Unfortunately, I never did see a couple of the things I was interested in - Rocky Horror, St. Paul & The Broken Bones, Brian May, Johnny Cash, Todd Snider, Slayer. Found all of the Flaming Lips stuff, but they all advertised upcoming "deluxe editions" of "Clouds Taste Metallic", so I held off on those. Held off on the Carcass - couldn't quite bring myself to part w/$30 for it. I did see a 10" I don't remember noticing before - "Terraplane Blues", Robert Johnson on one side, Steve Earle on the other.

I did pick up a few things - the Doors "Strange Days" in mono, the Reverend Horton Heat 7", the Garbage 10", and the Zappa 7". Also grabbed a Hard Working Americans 7" from last year, I believe. And a used Blue Man Group CD at the big used vinyl store here.

But here were the two big finds for me today - neither one a RSD release.

I finally found a vinyl copy of Roger Taylor's "Fun In Space" (still can't find a CD). It's a promo, in great condition, and it was only $3.

But, at the aforementioned big used vinyl store, they had the bargain area open today, and I found a copy of what is one of the holy grails for me. Kiss's debut album, Casablanca NBLP-9001 (I think), blue label. No "Kissing Time". I've never actually held one before. Unfortunately, it was in such bad condition I couldn't convince myself to buy it - the cover was mostly open - one seam was intact. The vinyl itself had a big dimple in it. Ah, well - maybe someday.

There are two other stores I'll probably visit - one almost certainly on Monday. I'll see if there's anything else floating around.
