The FTD label has released some fairly amazing stuff over the past decade-plus. I post about them every now and again, but nobody on these boards seems to collect Elvis.

I believe that "Moody Blue" is the final Presley album to get the expanded 2-disc treatment. I posted elsewhere (I forget where) that with this release, along with last months Vol. 2 of the "G.I. Blues" soundtrack and the forthcoming Vol. 3 of the American Studios 1969 sessions, it's unclear how they might package any leftover takes. The outtakes from "Speedway" and "Roustabout" appear to have been lost, although there is at least some late-era soundtrack material left--from films like "Charro" and "Change Of Habit." There is apparently also some unreleased takes on surviving binaural reels from the 1950's, although FTD faces the same problem that they faced with the Sun box last year--once they release anything like that, it immediately enters the public domain over in Europe.

I'm guessing that tracks 22 and 23 on Disc 1 are the single versions of both songs--two of the weirder and more obscure Presley tracks. I believe that the single was released posthumously, and both songs later showed up on the OOP "Elvis Aron Presley" box, and that "America The Beautiful" was (again, I believe) released on a CD single after 9/11. Both songs were recorded live, and not very well, sounding muffled, as though taken from a cassette. I wonder if FTD was able to improve the sound as well; again, I believe that "Softly As I Leave You," although once officially released, has just not shown up on many, if any, compilations.

The undubbed masters for "Little Darlin'," "If You Love Me (Let Me Know)" and "Unchained Melody" sound interesting--both were recorded live in 1977. The rest were recorded in the Jungle Room in Graceland in 1976.

I am somewhat of an Elvis collector - I have 90 some-odd titles - the single cds - the deluxe versions - the essential series - the double soundtrack cd's - the 50/60/70 boxes - the 5 or 6 other boxes - the hayride cuts - a few Sun Record cd comps - various RCA comps- also (not in the 90) all of his movies on dvd - I don't have any of the FTD label stuff and at this stage of the game - I don't know how I'd go about getting all of them now.

I like the Sun Record Elvis - the early RCA Elvis up till he got drafted - the initial return and also the comeback tv special Elvis. IMO King Creole is not only his best movie but maybe one of the top 50 movies of all time.

One of these days I'd like to start collecting Elvis. Mom used to drag me along to his movies when I was a child, and he was one of my first musical interests. Regarding Moody Blue, I'd always assumed that anything that late in his career was not worth listening to, but I finally heard this album after recently getting a turntable and really liked it, blue vinyl and all.
