P for Parsons. Especially since some of later albums dropped the "Project".

While I can't/won't argue with Jimbo's rationale here, what I'd really like to know is when was the last time that Jimbo filed everything in his collection?

I refuse to answer on the grounds that it might tend to make me look like an obsessive/compulsive nutjob.

P for Project of course. Put all projects under a P. Like The Apple Picking Project.

You mean like me? Seriously, if I didn't have most of my titles filed and in my database program, I don't know how I'd find things and my collection is quite modest compared to yours. When you're looking for a song that you're pretty sure you have on a compilation or soundtrack, but you've got over 1,000 compilations/soundtracks, a database program is a life saver.

So Jimbo...are we really to believe that you have everything filed? (Including the Alan Parsons Project under "P"?)

They're filed under 'CDs'.

Jimbo's collection?

or maybe this?

Aw heck...both just seem insufficient to when it comes to conceptualizing the Pope of Pop's collection!

I used to file my extensive APP collection under "A" just so it would be in the forefront, but I changed it to "P."

"Parsons, Alan (The Alan Parsons Project)" is how it ended up for me. Thanks everybody!

I also file it under Parsons. However, you could make a good argument for filing it under A. Before he died, Eric Woolfson talked about how it was a collaborative effort and the only reason Parsons' name was attached was due to his increased name recognition. He also released an album on "unreleased" APP tracks. Likewise, you could argue that Alice Cooper should be filed under A, as it was the name of a band and a character played by the lead singer. That said, it's too difficult to explain all that to someone looking at your collection so might as well file it under P.

Very good points! There are so many directions that we can go with this filing stuff and everyone's take can and will be a little different. Beyond simple (or not so simple) rules of alphabetizing, there are issues like do you file Ian Andersons's solo stuff with Jethro Tull or under "A"? For that matter, do you file Jethro Tull under "J" or "T"? (I file it under "J") It goes on and on, at least for us persnickety collectors.

If the album was by an actual person named Jethro Tull, then I'd file it under "T."

Originally, Alice Cooper was the name of the band. But when Vince Furnier left the band, he retained the name, so I file Alice Cooper under "C."

So you're saying that you'd file the Alan Parsons Project under "A"?

One could make that argument... for example, I file A.S.a.P. (Adrian Smith and Project) under "A" and Booker T. & The MGs under "B".

?uestlove is under "Q" (although my cataloguing software doesn't like that)... I'm not sure about the other.

I'm with you on this...having Booker T & The MGs under "B". There is something to be said with what I believe is the European style of filing, going purely on the first letter of the group or first letter of the first name. At least it's more consistent.

As I've mentioned before, filing rappers is a headache-inducing proposition. Ice Cube under 'I' or 'C'? How about Ice-T then? Since Hammer dropped the M.C. at some point, is he under 'H'? LL Cool J--don't even ask.
