I'm not a fan, but I know many here are. HD Tracks has this, it's likely some of the others do also. I have read it is dl only, that there is currently no physical media edition

"A compilation of 46 outtakes, alternate versions and live recordings. Comprised of recordings from live shows at Sacramento Memorial Auditorium, California (December 1963) and the BBC Playhouse Theatre, London (November 1964), as well as studio session outtakes, Keep an Eye on Summer - The Beach Boys Sessions 1964 is a snapshot of the Beach Boys in the early 1960s.

"Get ready to wail, Carl, right on the beat," says a producer at the beginning of seven minutes of rough tracks for "Fun, Fun Fun" that kick off Keep an Eye on Summer, a double-disc collection released to preserve copyrights on recordings the Beach Boys made in 1964. Released at the end of 2014, just as the clock was running out for these recordings, this is a clearinghouse of stereo mixes, a cappella versions, session highlights, alternate takes, and a few live cuts -- a jumble that tacitly underscores just how much the vaults have been mined on previous reissues. Then again, unlike such previous excavations, like 2001's Hawthorne, CA: Birthplace of a Musical Legacy, this doesn't attempt to make sense of the mess; it just presents it all, so it's ripe for cherry-picking. There are some nice things scattered all the way through -- the chatter is often fun, there are some neat subtle differences, the live stuff generally crackles despite the muted audio -- but there's no question this is for serious fans or perhaps even scholars, whatever kind of fan that can easily spot such minutia."

Having bought the Japanese SACDs, I can tell you as a Brian Wilson fan, stereo hi-res is less satisfying than mono redbook. That's not an assessment of the sound quality, I just don't like early Beach Boys recordings with that weak, very un-Brian-like separation.

It could also be your player. When all I had for SACD & dvd-a was a $100 Pioneer player, I thought dvda's were dreadful & SACD's were no better than cd (there's an old thread somewhere here where I discussed that with Barry Diament).

Also, the only reason I posted this is because I thought these were all rarities, not because of any sound quality issue (I haven't heard it). Are these not rare? I am BB ignorant!

I am a little surprised that Capitol chose to only issue it in this format.

It's not the sound per se, Geff. The SACDs are fine, I just dislike early stereo. Especially in the case of Brian Wilson productions, but really, all rockers back then were focused on mono.

If the above collection gets a physical release, I'll get it for completeness' sake, but I can't imagine listening to it more than once or twice.

They might be rare ... I'd have to check my Sea Of Tunes stuff ... the outtakes all become one big blur after a while.

Now your talking, I just love the "Sea of Tunes" stuff. I have them all and they are my pride and joy of my BB collection.

Good for you!
