Hey all,
I am sure this has been asked and answered already but I went back and couldn't find it, so maybe it was before I joined. Or maybe the old grey matter ain't what it used to be. Anyway sorry for the re-ask but here goes....
What is the story with the Fillmore East CD/DVD set being listed as Disc 02 in the Archive Series? Did I miss #01? And if so when did it come out and is it OOP now? I was at one of my favorite independent stores who said the last few that came in to his store used/promo were just the CD's w/o the DVD's. I also didn't know it came both ways. Or is the CD only set the missing #01? (that's my guess)
Any ideas on when the next one is due?
Thanks for the help. (Again, if already posted before)
Rich

Rich, i'm pretty sure the story on that is that Fillmore, although the first to be released, is not the first disc (or discs-set) in the series. But for whatever reasons, Young wanted to kick off the archives campaign with this (the 2nd disc in the series). Fear not, you haven't missed anything. #1 is yet to be released (or even it's contents revealed).

Oh, and also, as of yet, no release date on #1.
Whether you get the single disc version or the double with DVD audio (stereo only) bonus, they are both considered "#2" in the series. As a long time Neil fan (more of vintage than present stuff), i'd have to say it's the best thing (overall) he has released since "After the Goldrush" or "Harvest", but i'd probably say that about anything released from this vintage period. The sound is great and the performances are as well. With the DVD bonus disc, you hear the album, but with a montage of black and white stills from the show as a visual companion. There are the typical other minimal "special features"; lyrics, a sorta cool still shot menu where you can click on different things in the photo and see, as i recall, trivia tidbits (could be mistaken on specifics here, only watched it once, so far). Getting the double on sale for $16.99 (i think) was worthwhile, but i don't know if i'd wanna pay over $20.00 for it, but if you're a hard-core Neil fan the double is a must (if only for the stills; no pun intended).
The only other issue that came up regarding this was the packaging. Although i usually like the mini-LP format, as with other U.S. attempts at this type of special packaging (did anyone encounter nightmares with those Bowie 2-cd hardbound deluxe editions...the cds were slid into very tight hard cardboard pockets, the two i bought intially were both extremely scuffed and damaged - i returned them and abandoned any further attempts), the cd and dvd are both in the sleeve pockets with no exterior sleeve to protect them, and, of course, naturally, the play sides face the side of the pocket with the inner cardboard lip overlap. If you're not into "new" cds with scuffs at all, then i'd open and inspect before you leave the parking lot (assuming it's an over-the-counter purchase). Mine had some minor marks (that i can live with), but the potential is there for more extreme scuffs and scratches; luck of the draw!
Enjoy it (you most certainly will), and Happy New Year!

Great and thanks. I was hoping I didn't miss anything and figured it was something strange (in his universe). I am usually on top of new stuff but you never know. Thanks

Neil Young kicking off an archive series with disc #2 seems oddly appropriate. That man works in strange and mysterious ways...regarding his catalog, I mean.

Here's what I have written on my erasable board I keep here in my computer room. Neil Young-Live Archive Release-Spring '07, 1st of 4 Studio Archive Box Sets-Fall '07. Mind you, as with anything Neil, nothing is set in stone. But this was the latest that I've heard. In fact, I may have heard it from one of you guys.

It's been more than thirteen years since Neil promised an archive release of a previously unreleased CSNY album, that's right, a whole flippin' vintage CSNY album from the seven-teeees. Tick... tick... tick...

They're very hard to find, but the Japanese make both rice paper (like the old LP sleeves) & cloth (this was used in the US Prince Around The World In A Day 1st Edition) cd inner sleeves. I agree, the record labels should NEVER release cd's in this pacaging without sleeves.

Actually the paper sleeves like the ones in Japan Mini LP's are very easy to get on EBay. I alays buy them in packs of 50 to save my discs from scuffing. They came in very handy for the Robert Plant box, the Neil Young Fillmore and many other Digipaks without proper trays.

That's good to know. I've never seen the rice paper (not regular paper) sleeves on ebay; I found one Japan import site that has them.

To Geff and Barry, yes, like you both i also try to have extra japanese inner sleeves on hand (i prefer the woven cloth-like ones, and usually get them from a guy in L.A. for about $15 per hundred). It's only the times when the cd is already scuffed and scratched upon initially opening it when even having the sleeves cannot help (but of course can prevent further damage).

Tyvek sleeves from bagsunlimited work great as well.

I don't use the tyvek, I believe they can scratch cd's.

Is it possible, as I seem to recall but now cannot document, that Fillmore was orginally announced and actually is a two-disc set including both Neil's solo acoustic set (disc 1) as well as the electric set with Crazy Horse (disc 2)?...I'm willing to bet and hoping beyond hope that's what we eventually see and hear... I refused to buy the single disc

Neil Young Opens Archives
Eight CDs and two DVDs of unreleased material as well as memorabilia will be released this fall.
Thursday, January 18, 2007
Legendary rocker Neil Young is finally honoring a decades-old promise to dig deep into his archives - a boxset of unreleased material will be hitting stores later this year.
The 60-year-old will unveil 'Archives Volume 1,' which features eight CDs and two DVDs of unreleased live and studio material as well as memorabilia, this fall.
Before that, Young is releasing a solo concert CD, 'Live At Massey Hall,' recorded in January 1971 in Toronto, Canada.
The disc contains songs that were released on Young's 1972 album 'Harvest.' However, Young now wishes he'd then taken the advice of his longtime producer David Briggs, and released 'Live At Massey Hall' instead.
He says, "I was very excited about the takes we got on 'Harvest' and wanted 'Harvest' out. David disagreed. As I listen to this ('Live At Massey Hall') today, I can see why."

Check out the following story from Uncut:
http://www.uncut.co.uk/music/neil_young ... es/9278=20
Long-awaited details about the forthcoming Neil Young Archives box-set have surfaced today.
The anticipated release date of 'Archives, Volume 1' is September this year.
The collection will feature eight discs, including "Live At the Filmore" (released last November) and "Live At Massey Hall", a solo set from 1971 which is due out on March 26 .
Thirty-eight previously unreleased songs will feature on Archives, billed as a 'musical autobiography' of Neil Young. Tantalisingly, the eight CDs only cover the period from 1964 to 1971, suggesting it is only the beginning of a vast release campaign.
Allan Jones, Editor of Uncut says "This is incredible news for Neil Young fans, like myself, who seem to have been waiting the best part of our adult lives for the release of this archive material. Neil has been talking about it for years. When I interviewed him in 1989, he told me it was coming together and to expect it soon. Which is also what he told me when I interviewed him in 1993. It looks finally like it's s happening at last, though, incrediblly enough. On the evidence of the Live at The Filmore CD, it should be mind-blowing stuff."
We'll announce more details about Archives, Volume 1 on Uncut.co.uk as we get them.

I don't have an active interest in Archives, Volume 1, but shouldn't all eight discs be exclusive to this set?! I would imagine Neil Young fans would have already bought the two live CDs by the time the box set comes out. That doesn't make sense to me.

Well, I guess I'll hold off on the fillmore set until at least September. I held off as protest to its premium priceing despite it being an incomplete representaion of the shows and the not only cheap, but downright negligent packaging (particularly for the deluxe edition). If the box does not show up as promised (yet again), by then it may be available through BMG.
Despite my negativity, I am highly psyched about the release; I've had its funding collecting nicely in some fed notes for well over a decade now.

I'm disappointed in the news of the repetition of the two live releases. I really hope this gets changed and that Neil's fans let him know loud and clear. Depending on what I see on the box, I'm now considering the possibility that I won't pick up the first box.

After giving it a couple of days worth of thought, I've decided that I will get the first Archive box even though I'm not totally thrilled (if true) that two of the discs will be the Massey Hall & Fillmore East shows we will have already picked up.
