As we head into 2017, we're starting our 6th year of the Dave's Picks series. And we can't thank you enough for continuing to support, and being interested in, our quarterly archival release series. When we started the series, with a long phone call in the summer of 2011 between myself and Doran and Mark at Rhino, we decided to retire the Road Trips series and start something new, something that was specifically crafted to meet the needs and interests that reflected your feedback over the previous four years. In late 2011, I mapped out the first five years, 20 Picks, of the series, but not beyond that. Although we veered off course quite a bit in those five years and 20 Picks, we did so mainly because of the flexibility we've allowed ourselves in letting the music play the series. What's right to release at any given time is what we focus on. As for the next five years, Picks #21-40? We don't know what's beyond #21 (which you might have heard is the exceptional 4/2/73 show at the Boston Garden, a truly perfectly-played example of the excellence that defined 1973 Grateful Dead concerts), but we have some great ideas brewing. The world of archival Grateful Dead music has some exciting times ahead, so stay tuned. We love working on this series, and we do it because of you. Your support and feedback and enthusiasm is what drives us to make each Pick as exciting as the last one. - David
Due to continued demand, we're keeping the 2017 Dave’s Picks production run at 16,500 of each of the four releases, but as with the 20 previous volumes, we expect all of the four Dave’s Picks in 2017 to sell out quickly; some of the past releases sold out in less than 24 hours! We say this every year, and we'll keep saying it because it is true - the only way to avoid disappointment and be guaranteed that you'll receive all four Dave's Picks in 2017 is to subscribe.
In addition to the four CD releases in 2017, totaling 12 CDs, you’ll also get the subscription-exclusive bonus disc, which has proven to be one of the most highly sought after collectables we’ve ever released and free domestic shipping. Thanks Charles, with the holidays and all I put this on the back burner and actually forgot about the window. Being a subscriber now for a couple years this was a no brainer to re-up!
Dave's Picks Volume 21: Boston Garden, Boston, MA 4/2/73
"We all expect Big Things from the Big Songs, but all the smaller songs in this show are stunningly played. That extra something in every song that makes a great show GREAT? It's here in every song. And as for the bigger songs, they certainly deliver as well." - David Lemieux
Just like the man says, you've also come to expect "Big Things" from the Dave's Picks series. We certainly intend to deliver with Boston Garden, April 2, 1973, our first archival release of the new year. Clocking in at 34 songs, this one's a whopper and a solid one, at that.
One might think the Grateful Dead a bit weary at the end of a long run, but no sir (or ma'am!), they left nothing behind and showed no signs of slowing down on this epic night. In fact, they packed both sets with an inventive pastiche of brand-new ("Wave That Flag," "Eyes Of The World," "Row Jimmy") and newly-minted classics ("Mississippi Half-Step," "Stella Blue") played to near-perfection. Once you hear this version taken from the 10" master reels, we know you’ll agree.
Mastered to HDCD specs by Jeffrey Norman and featuring illustrations by 2017 Dave's Picks Artist-In-Residence Dave Van Patten (stay tuned for his profile), Dave's Picks Volume 21 is limited to 16,500 individually numbered copies.
Fair warning: these releases sell out more and more quickly as the years go on. There's truly no time to wait!

I finally got my copy. The show is pretty good and the band is in fine form, but damn, if Donna doesn't kill the mood for me with her off key warbling on disc 2.

Just playing this. Donna's solo on You Ain't Woman Enough gives a new meaning to "dreadful". Fortunately, I've never heard that garbage before.

Feelin' fine with the Felt Forum! Dave's Picks Volume 22 presents the last stop on a collector's choice run in the Grateful Dead's home-away-from-home, New York City. 12/7/71 yields a highly pleasurable Pigpen-filled show and what was surely a top-notch Tuesday for all who attended. Talk about vibe-ing with the crowd! At their prime in terms of lineup and performance, the Dead churned out a batch of songs that would soon become well-worn Europe '72 favorites ("Jack Straw," "Brown Eyed Women") and also served up solid versions of freshly-minted classics ("Sugar Mag," "Friend," "Casey Jones"). That winning combination of Pigpen AND Keith? Nothing but peak "signature showstoppers" including what could potentially be the finest "Smokestack Lightning" of all time. The complete show runs a wee bit short (for a Grateful Dead show, that is) so we've rounded out the release with much of the second set from the previous night, December 6, 1971. With exceptional takes on the likes of "Wharf Rat" and "Uncle John's Band" and a massive "The Other One," we're pretty sure you won't mind.
Limited to 16,500 individually numbered copies, Dave's Picks Volume 22: Felt Forum, New York, NY - 12/7/71 has been mastered to HDCD specs by Jeffrey Norman and features illustrations by our 2017 Artist in Residence Dave Van Patten (stay tuned to learn more about the illustrator in an upcoming All In The Family piece).
