A thread from the ICE board:
Are there any Wes Montgomery fans here? Which release of the "Incredible Jazz Guitar of Wes Montgomery" should I get? I think I have three choices:
1. the one that was issued around 1991
2. the 20-Bit remaster from 2000
3. the hybrid SACD reissue from 2003
It's also included on the 12 CD box set. I'm holding off on that.
Are there any other Wes releases anyone would recommend? I'm also planning on getting "Full House".
I'll probably ask the same question on the Hoffman site but would like some input here as well.

davidw,
I'd recommend his collaberation with Jimmy Smith "The Dynamic Duo", as well as the verve compilation: "Impressions"...

NoURider,
Thanks. "Impressions" looks like a good comp for the years it covers. I might also get the collaboration with Jimmy Smith later on.

davidw,
The 2CD Impressions is a great set. It has a few collaborations with Jimmy Smith, but what really makes it stand out is the second disc, which is a restored version of the concert that was Smokin' At The Half Note. To hear the unadulterated Wes live, with a great trio behind him, is the perfect setting. To this day, its still one of the all-time clinics in jazz guitar.

Sekander,
Thanks. Yes, I will get "Impressions".
For those interested, the early '90's OJC release is recommended for "Incredible Jazz" over on the Steve Hoffman site. The master tapes were lost and supposedly it will never sound better.

The boxset is well worth the money. Wes' greatest and most influential recordings were with the Riverside label. Verve tried to commercialize him a little. However, 'Movin' Wes' and 'Tequila' are still really enjoyable albums to play.
If you are looking to add to 'Incredible Jazz Guitar,' another must have from his Riverside days is 'Full House.'
