MILES DAVIS QUINTET - Live In Europe 1967 - The Bootleg Series Vol.1 (3CD / 1DVD)

Pre-order ‘MILES DAVIS QUINTET - Live In Europe 1967 - The Bootleg Series Vol.1’ featuring Miles Davis’ “Second Great Quintet” featuring WAYNE SHORTER, HERBIE HANCOCK, RON CARTER and TONY WILLIAMS -- arguably the single greatest small group ensemble in jazz history.

The recordings from their 1967 European tour are some of the only existing documentation of the band performing compositions from the extraordinary series of studio albums they made between 1965-1967 -- E.S.P., Miles Smiles, Sorcerer and Nefertiti. Now fans can hear live versions of “Agitation” (from E.S.P.), “Footprints" and "Gingerbread Boy” ( from Miles Smiles), “Masquelero" (from Sorcerer ) and “Riot" (from Nefertiti); PLUS, Miles revisits some of the earlier classics he had been performing for years -- “Round Midnight”, “On Green Dolphin Street”, I Fall In Love Too Easily” and “No Blues” -- all in strikingly different interpretations from the original studio versions. Seeing this band in action only further emphasizes their near supernatural rapport!

Tracklisting notes:

The three concerts included on the three CDs are from Antwerp, 10/28/67, Copenhagen, 11/2/67 and Paris, 11/6/67. The Paris concert, at 90 minutes the longest of the shows in this collection, appears here for the first time with the entire program including the very rare versions of “Agitation” and “Footprints” that are generally not found on the spotty bootleg versions that have circulated. Antwerp, which was the first show on the tour, contains an hour plus set. Copenhagen, the rarest of the three audio shows, has never been released commercially -- not even as a bootleg -- so it is a particularly rare item with some 50 minutes of music.

The DVD has two shows from the tour -- one from Stockholm, 10/31/67, and one from Karlsruhe, Germany, 11/7/67. This is the only video documentation that exists of this band from the 1965-1968 period. It’s only previous authorized release was in 2009 on the 70 CD + 1 DVD Complete Miles Davis Columbia Album Collection.

Pretty exciting news, especially if this really is volume one. I can think of more than a few years I'd like to hear represented. Good start though.

I hope this is in a long line of bootlegs like the Dylan series.

I prefer earlier acoustic Miles, but still glad to see they're doing this.
