Description For nearly half a century, Eddie Daniels has continued to be one of the leading voices of modern jazz clarinet. Just as Buddy DeFranco made the transition from Benny Goodman to Charlie Parker, Eddie helped bring the clarinet from the post-bop era into the modern age. For this exciting project, Daniels focuses on the work of Brazilian composer Egberto Gismonti with arrangements by Ted Nash, Kuno Schmidt, Josh Nelson. A guitar and piano virtuoso, Egberto Gismonti has created a body of work that stands at the crossroads of his native Brazil’s folk tradition and the world of classical music. The ECM recording artist has been described as approaching the fretboard as though it were a keyboard, often creating the impression of more than one player. A critical stage in his development was his encounter with the indigenous peoples of the Amazon rain forest and their music: his researches, and human encounters, changed his view of the expressive possibilities of musical language and continue to fertilize his work to this day. “As a composer, what matters most to me is knowing that my music is being heard or played by musicians,” Gismotnti says. “Sometimes they are Japanese, German, English, Brazilian or French, and sometimes they are musicians who are independent of nationality because of their uniqueness and musical qualities.” Gismonti has nothing but praise for this recording. “After four songs I’m moving in my chair, my heart racing, happy, surprised, grateful for the dedication of all in the realization of this project that honors me as a composer and gives me hope that we should be happy despite of the current reality of the world. Many thanks to all of the arrangers, musicians, and producer who, with such varied ideas, recreated the magic of these songs with their Brazilian roots to successfully become new musical pieces.”Tracklist 1.
