Description
AMERICAN EPIC, a film series produced by Allison McGourty, Duke Erikson and Director Bernard MacMahon, explores the pivotal recording journeys at the height of the Roaring Twenties, when music scouts armed with cutting-edge recording technology captured the breadth of American music and discovered the artists that would shape our world.

The recordings they made of all the ethnic groups of America democratized the nation and gave a voice to everyone. Country singers in the Appalachians, Blues guitarists in the Mississippi Delta, Gospel preachers across the south, Cajun fiddlers in Louisiana, Tejano groups from the Texas Mexico border, Native American drummers in Arizona, and Hawaiian musicians were all recorded. It was the first time America heard itself.

AMERICAN EPIC: The Collection gathers 100 of these original recordings from the 1920s and 1930s in one five-disc set, restored to unprecedented levels of sonic fidelity. For this box set, compiled by Director Bernard MacMahon, engineer Nicholas Bergh refined a transfer process using a mix of both modern and vintage equipment in order to extract the remarkable resolution from the records that is often missed. This reverse engineering approach to the transfer process enabled the restoration team of Grammy Award-winning engineer Peter Henderson, Duke Erikson and Joel Tefteller to get the resulting audio closer to the original performance than ever before.

This is not "remastering," in the normal sense, but something closer to fine art restoration. The intent is not for people to marvel at the antiquity of these discs, but rather to experience them as vital, immediate performances that speak to us as directly as they did on the day they were recorded not simply great art for their time, but great art for all times. It includes a 100-page book filled with stunning unpublished photographs, quotes from the artists, their friends and families, lyrics for every song, essays and recording notes. Among the artists included are Mississippi John Hurt, The Carter Family, Charley Patton, Jimmie Rodgers, Lydia Mendoza, Nelstone's Hawaiians, Big Chief Henry's String Band, Robert Johnson and many others.

This could be most interesting / amazing! Just did a little digging', the documentary will be on PBS in 3 parts (3.5 hours total) on Tuesdays May 16, 23, & 30 (check your local listings as they say).

Part 1: The Big Bang: Travel to 1920s Tennessee as the Carter Family, Jimmie Rodgers and the Memphis Jug Band make their first records with producer Ralph Peer on a revolutionary portable electronic recording system, creating the first R&B songs and modern country music. (57 min)

Part 2: Blood + Soil: Travel to the rural South as Elder Burch, Charley Patton and others record early Delta blues, gospel and protest songs. The Great Flood of 1927 devastates Mississippi River communities, leading to northern migration and Chicago Blues by Howlin' Wolf. (57 min)

Part 3: Out of the Many, The One: Discover how America's diverse cultures contribute to its musical styles: from the Hopi tribe to Hawaii's Joseph Kekuku to Mexican-American Lydia Mendoza and the Cajun Breaux Family. Mississippi John Hurt's blues inspires a generation of musicians. (87 min)

Thanks for the heads up.
I never thought I 'd see Joseph Kekuku mentioned anywhere again.

I'm really enjoying this TV series. It's too bad it's only going to be 3.5 hours long, this is something that should go on for at least 10 hours, and I'd take 20 !!

As this (& much, much more related to the TV show) is out in hi-res audio, I wish to heck they had included 20's-30's jazz (my favorite jazz period).

As I mentioned above, there are a number of audio releases (at least on official hi-res) related to this set. I've seen 3 single artist acoustic blues, a Carter Family, a single artist gospel acoustic blues, & a multi album box.

The titles are shown here:
http://www.americanepicmusic.com/
though it's hard to see which titles are being released via Jack White's Third Man Records. There are 8 titles coming out on vinyl:

It turns out there's another episode on PBS next week, a 3-hour recording session by modern artists singing the old songs. Sounds like that Neil Young experiment thingy from 3 years ago, not exactly what I was hoping for:

Jack White and T Bone Burnett lead an epic recording session using the only working 1920s recording device in existence in this tribute to the artists celebrated in the American Epic documentary series. The recording device is timed by a weight-driven system of clockwork gears. Stripped of the comforts and security of modern technology, the artists have three minutes and one chance to get their music etched into the surface of a revolving wax disc before the weight hits the floor. Conceived as a sonic experiment-an attempt to recreate the conditions of the early record company field teams-the result is a series of career-topping performances by leading artists pushed to meet the standards of their heroes. Going back to basics and capturing the energy of a unique live performance, these recordings are heard exactly as they were made. Musicians featured: Alabama Shakes, The Americans, Ana Gabriel, Ashley Monroe, The Avett Brothers, Beck, Bettye LaVette, Bobby Ingano, Elton John, Frank Fairfield, Jerron "Blind Boy" Paxton, Los Lobos, Lost Bayou Ramblers, Nas, Pokey LaFarge, Raphael Saadiq, Rhiannon Giddens, Steve Martin and Edie Brickell, Taj Mahal, Jack White, and Willie Nelson and Merle Haggard.

A similar thing was done 3 years ago. It was called " The 78 Project", and featured Richard Thompson, Rosanne Cash, Loudon Wainwright III and several other fine artists.
The episode should be interesting, and there are a few artists here I will always listen to.

Thanks for the tip. It appears to be vinyl & mp3 only (per Amazon). Are they right?

I believe that is the case. I thought they would go CD eventually but so far no dice. I did the MP3's.

2 CD set of the Sessions coming next week:

Only vinyl and mp3 for the individual artist best ofs.

Also hi-res downloads of some of the individual artists.
