OMG she was the keeper of the flame, very protective of Frank's legacy. She released some great stuff from the vault much of which would probably never see the light of day if it wasn't for her. Most of the time her information was hard to understand by design. The truth was that she was dealing in a product that never really had much of a demand, I am unsure how they made a profit. I have exchanged many emails with her over the years most of them were sort of answers to questions on what was about to be released. When Ryco released 200 Motels she emailed me to ask what was included on it, she was upset with Ryco. One time I told her if I won the $300 million power ball jackpot, I'd be calling her to finance several releases including a complete Waterbury box set. That never happened. Last year I came very close to investing in Roxy by Proxy/ Roxy the movie but I couldn't justify $1,000 for one cd. Last year was supposed to be the year of Zappa, next she ended up in the hospital and all releases stopped. There were rumors she was ill. When she transferred control of the ZFT it sounded like something was up. It was passed off as she wanted to oversee the 100th release from the catalog. With the upcoming release of Roxy weeks away, it seems unreal as she has taken a lot of heat on whether it would ever happen. She will be missed. I didn't agre with everything she did, she was always at war with the former members of the Mothers or so it seemed. Time has proven that FZ had all the talent and the vision, whereas the band members are favorites of mine, they never really went anywhere without him and continue to eek out a living playing his music. One thing I think Gail got wrong was prohibiting other bands to play he music, to me that is one way to get it heard and bring new fans into the fold. I have seen some of the pictures and articles on the web, I must say she was very beautiful when she was young, she had the prettiest eyes... For those that are interested FZ wrote a love song to her entitled Solitude. Written in the mid 70s it was recorded during the 1980 rehearsals and it is out there in the tape trader circles. It was very dear to Gail and it seems she didn't want to share it. Maybe now it will see the light of day. Nothing left to say but thank you Gail, thanks for being the keeper of the flame. I promise if I do win Power Ball I will contact the ZFT and will help get the music of FZ out there.

lyrics to Solitude
The lyrics
You have brought me solitude, And I believe it is the time for me to show some gratitude. I think I'll take a minute to reflect upon your attitude, But most of all I love the way that you have brought me solitude.
You have been a friend to me, And I believe it is the time for me to show some sympathy. I watch the way you suffer with the problems only I can see, But most of all I love the way that you have been a friend to me.
You have been misunderstood, And I believe it is the time for you to feel the way you should. I'd love to see you smile a while and know that you was feeling good, But mostly I regret the way that you have been misunderstood.
You have been a friend to me, And I believe it is the time for me to show some sympathy. I watch the way you suffer with the problems only I can see, But most of all I love the way that you have been a friend to me.
You have brought me solitude, you have brought me solitude . . . [repeats]
Comments Steve Vai, interviewed by Andrew Greenaway, The Idiot Bastard, June 4, 1997
IB: Tell me about the song "Solitude" which you performed for Gail at the Zappa's Universe rehearsals [...].
SV: It was a song that we rehearsed in the 80 band. Frank had written it before then, but we had rehearsed it in an attempt to persuade Frank to play it—which you really can't do.
IB: It wasn't a typical Zappa song.
SV: It was the least typical Zappa song I ever heard. When I asked him if it was written for Gail, he said "No." But I know it was because Gail told me it was. Obviously it's written for her.
IB: It wasn't actually recorded—just rehearsed?
SV: Well I have heard a tape, I believe, of tracks for that song with the David Logeman band—for the You Are What You Is album. And we rehearsed it, and Frank came in as he does sometimes if he's in a certain mood—he just started chopping songs from the list. We learned a hundred songs and that was one that got chopped. But I remember Arthur Barrow had a cassette of it from rehearsal and years later I wanted to record it. I wanted to do something with it but Gail's very sensitive about that song. It's a very special song for her and rightly so.
IB: Did you actually sing it at that time?
SV: Yeah, I did. I got the tape from Arthur. I believe it was Arthur—it was either Arthur or Scott Thunes. I think it was maybe Scott Thunes, I can't even remember now. And then I learned it and I did a little version of it for Gail at the sound check for Zappa's Universe. I totally blew it. I remember she just sat there with her hand over her mouth. But I talked to her about that song.
IB: So probably it'll never see the light of day officially?
SV: Well there were other people that wanted to record it, but I think Gail wants Dweezil to record it first.
The 'other people' who wanted to record it were probably Banned From Utopia, who recorded it on a demo in 1995. The rehearsal tape Steve mentions is also in circulation, and Arthur Barrow once posted that he had a tape of FZ, Ray and Ike singing it—sounds like quite a gem!

From Rolling Stone: Quote: Frank Zappa's Widow Gail Zappa Dead at 70
As longtime head of Zappa Family Trust, wife was responsible for issuing close to 40 albums of previously unreleased music by Frank since his 1993 death
By Kory Grow October 7, 2015
Gail Zappa, Frank Zappa's widow, has died at age 70. Gail Zappa, wife of Frank Zappa and executrix of the Zappa Family Trust, has died. She was 70. A cause of death has not been revealed, though TMZ reported she had had a long battle with lung cancer. Zappa, "departed this earth peacefully at her home ... surrounded by her children," according to a statement from the Zappa Family Trust.
"Gail will forever be identified as a key figure in the creative renaissance that is Laurel Canyon," the statement says. "But more than any singular accomplishment, she defined herself in her personal relationships, happiest when surrounded by loved ones and artists, often one in the same. The memories she leaves behind are indeed her own art form. Her searing intelligence, unforgettable smile, wild thicket of hair and trailing black velvets leave a blur in her wake."
After her prolific husband died of prostate cancer in 1993, Gail kept Frank's recordings in the public, putting out dozens of posthumous albums and judiciously licensing his image where appropriate. Earlier this year, the Zappa family announced that the couple's son Ahmet would be in charge of the Trust.
Gail, whose full maiden name was Adelaide Gail Sloatman, was born on January 1st, 1945, the daughter of a nuclear weapons research physicist with the U.S. Navy, according to Zappa biographer Barry Miles. She lived with her family in London as a teenager and got a job as a secretary for the Office of Naval Research and Development rather than attend college. She met Doors frontman Jim Morrison in kindergarten, since they both had high-ranking naval officials for fathers (Frank once told a story that she hit Morrison over the head with a hammer). She eventually moved to New York, where she attended the Fashion Institute of Technology in the mid-Sixties and immersed herself in the music scene before hitchhiking to Los Angeles with a friend.
In Los Angeles, Gail met and befriended future Runaways manager Kim Fowley, and recorded an album with him billed to Bunny and Bear; Miles noted that she was "Bear." She met her husband-to-be when she was the secretary at the Sunset Strip mainstay the Whisky a Go Go. In his autobiography, The Real Frank Zappa Book, the artist called her a "fascinating little vixen," with whom "it took a couple of minutes, but I fell (don't laugh) in love."
They started living together and married in a "severely ridiculous civil ceremony" in 1967. Frank recounted the ceremony comically in the book, stating that Gail was nine months pregnant at the time, and that he didn't have a wedding ring and that she still didn't have a wedding ring at the time he wrote the book, which came out in 1989.
The couple had four children – Moon Unit, Dweezil, Ahmet and Diva – over the course of their marriage, which lasted until Frank's death. The composer recalled affectionately in his book that it was her idea to name their son Dweezil, after a "funny-looking little toe" she had. "I thought then, and continue to think today, that Dweezil is a nice name," Frank wrote. "Fuck the nurse if she didn't like it."
After setting up the Zappa Family Trust, Gail issued 38 albums between 1994 and 2015 of previously unreleased music that Frank had recorded. This year's Dance Me This was billed as Frank's final album and is significant for being his 100th record.
Gail spoke with Rolling Stone in August about a documentary that filmmaker Alex Winter is making about Frank's life. "My obligation was to get the work out there the way Frank built it in the first place," she said of her role after his death.
She also shared what she hoped the documentary, due sometime in 2017, would explain. "If I was gonna have to do this myself, I would want the question answered: 'Why the fuck would anyone want to be a composer?'" she said. "I know the answer to that, because I lived it. I just want it revealed." I didn't always agree with what the ZFT did - the attempts to stop the tribute bands, the declaration that only ZPZ "plays it right", overpriced releases, the Roxy $1000 thing, but if it wasn't for the ZFT promoting Frank's recordings, they'd be sitting in the vault. I submitted stuff to the Michael Hedges estate after his death, and that should serve as an example of how not to keep an incredible composer relevant. At least the ZFT got something out there. RIP, Gail.

I've submitted cd quality concerts (that I recorded with permission from the soundboard in the 70's) of 2 deceased artists to the copyright holders, & while in one case the record company gushed about what I mailed them; none of the shows have so far been released.
