I plan to start digging into Nick Cave's catalogue next. Any suggestions on where to start?

I'd start with the album Murder Ballads.[that was my 1st Nick Cave cd btw]

My first Nick Cave album was Henry's Dream, which I loved. Let Love In, Murder Ballads and the two Grinderman albums are favorites. Outside Nocturama (which only has one song I like), I pretty much love everything.

On a nonmusical note, I recommend the movie The Proposition, an Australian western with a screenplay written by Nick Cave. It's got the hyper-realistic tone of 70s spaghetti westerns, and a truly zany, off-the-wall supporting performance by John Hurt. Try it.

About 10 years ago I decided to check out his music after reading some articles & reviews in Mojo. I started with "Murder Ballads" and "The Boatman's Call" and was immediately hooked. Within a year I owned the whole catalog. I'm not a huge punk fan, so his earlier stuff is hit-and-miss for me (even though they all have amazing songs on them). "Tender Prey" is where I start really loving his music. I think the two I started with are a great entry point, as well as "Henry's Dream," "No More Shall We Part," the amazing live album "Abbatoir Blues Tour," and the two Grinderman albums.

Happy listening!

I'm listening to Murder Ballads right now and it's terrific. My local indie has The Boatman's Call and Abattoir Blues Tour, and I think I'll pick them up later today. Thanks everyone!

If you've never seen Cave live, let me tell you that it is an experience. Hell of a performer.

Ironically, the one time I got to see him live, I was a bit disappointed. It was a few years ago at The Theater at Madison Square Garden (what real New Yorkers still refer to as The Felt Forum). I've never liked the sound there, and the power of that amazing band was unfortunately compromised by the sound system. The live DVDs from the "Abbatoir Blues Tour" package show how incredible they are, so I consider that my real Nick Cave concert experience.

My review of Murder Ballads: WOW! I think I'll be dropping some cash in the next few weeks.

Something that didn't make it on Murder Ballads, but was a B-side of one of its singles (or something like that). Love this tune.

Trevor, the guy's just getting into Nick Cave and you're already thrusting b-sides on him? Let's give him some breathing room.

Seriously, though, many of his b-sides are amazing. I'm glad Mute released "B-Sides And Rarities" just as I was really getting into his music. 3 discs and more than 50 songs...what a great way to catch up on all that music and not have to buy the individual singles, soundtracks and compilations those songs appeared on.

As Robbie Robertson said: "No, I like it. It's good."
