RIP
No idea he was sick.

I'm glad I got to see that last BOC concert with the original lineup.

Yeah, Eric Bloom posted this earlier. Said Allen had been in the hospital. If you'd seen him any time in the last 10 years or so, it was fairly obvious he was having health issues.

I remembered Allen (from the few times I met him backstage or after gigs) as a bit cranky, but quiet and nice. Thanks for all the great music Allen (and some kick-ass trade off solos with Buck).

Here's Eric's post:

Quote:
My great friend Allen Lanier has passed. I'll miss the guy even though we hadn't spoken in awhile. He was so talented as a musician and a thinker. He read voraciously, all kinds of things, especially comparative religion. We drove for years together, shared rooms in the early days. We partied, laughed, played. All BOC fans and band members will mourn his death. Ultimately smoking finally got to him. He had been hospitalized with C.O.P.D. It was Allen who heard some old college band tapes of mine and suggested I get a shot as the singer in 1968. A lot of great memories, over 40 years worth. Maybe he's playing a tune with Jim Carroll right now.

This is so sad, COPD is a terrible thing to endure. Thank you Allan for providing some of the best music I heard in my lifetime.

Oh damn. As I've said before, BOC were our hometown heavy metal heroes, growing up on LI in the 70s.

RIP Allen.

From Joe Bouchard:

Quote:
Thank you to all my friends and fans who have posted their condolences concerning Allen Lanier's passing.
It is a very sad day for us all.
I worked with Allen for many years and I loved the style and attitude he brought to the band. Some of my favorite Allen parts among many were his piano intro to Joan Crawford, the synth solo in Flaming Telepaths, the wild organ solo in Diz-Busters, and his amazing piano intro to Astronomy. He was quite critical of all of the us in the recording process and kept us honest when he could.
His health was not great in later years, he played on tour as long as he could. Even after I left the band, and he came back into the band, I felt he brought back a certain rebel attitude that Blue Öyster Cult needed to be authentic.
We got to play together one last time back in November of 2012 for the 40th anniversary concert. As I've stated before, my favorite moment that night, by far, was in the middle of one song, probably OD'd On Life Itself, where I looked over at Allen and he looked at me and we started laughing spontaneously. The music sounded so great and it felt like just the decades fell away and we were back in the 70s.
R.I.P. Allen. It was great knowing you.

Something else posted courtesy of Steve Schenk - rehearsal footage for the 40th anniversary show of the band playing "Career of Evil" with Allen and Patty Smith, which is a treat since Patty was unable to make the rescheduled show.

Cross-posting from the BOC thread:

Quick post to note that since its been 2 years (!) since Allen Lanier's passing. The band played NYC tonight, and to honor Allen, Al Bouchard joined them for a few songs, an acoustic take on "Death Valley Nights" and "Cities on Flame."
