There are some Live recorded music that are special to me.
One live recording that I seem to play often is by Taste - Featuring Rory Gallagher from a live album recorded at The Isle Of Wight from 1970.
One song has a particular effect on me from that performance.
The song 'Sinner Boy' from that show sounds like a band playing as if they are obsessed. It is an extrordinary performance and song. Rorys vocals are harowing as is his incredible slide guitar solo which I have tried to learn for over 20 years only recently discovering it's in a strange tuning!
What compliments Rory is the amazing drumming from John Wilson. This man can play drums! His voodoo style/ American Indian? drumming perfectly compliments this song. If you look at the few surviving TV clips of Taste in concert on youtube you'll see John Wilson's wild drumming.

Sadly this concert was filmed and only a fragment has been available so far on DVD including an edited Sinner Boy with a nude woman on stage!

Rory Gallagher was one of those rare artists who played every night as if it was his last. Another who comes to mind is Judy Garland who sang her guts out every night.

The Who - "Won't Get Fooled Again" from "The Kids Are Alright". One that never fails to get me.

Dire Straits - "Romeo And Juliet" from "Live Alchemy".

Thin Lizzy - "Rosalie" from "Live And Dangerous". Not necessarily the best track on the album, but it just has...it.

Kiss - "Black Diamond" from "Alive!". Still hungry, this is probably the definitive recording of this song. Although the version from "Animalize - Live Uncensored" is close.

Queen's set at Live Aid. Possibly the best live performance I've ever seen. It never fails to leave me slack-jawed.

Is the James Gang concert a bootleg? I'd be very keen to hear this, I have a DVD bootleg of them in Paris 1971 bloody good show with lousy sound.

... also, the unreleased stereo mix of The Beatles' 1964 Hollywood Bowl appearance is an outstanding live recording. I listen to it a lot!

I really love Genesis's live album Seconds Out. Came at a time I was really getting into the band and saw them live at MSG in 1978 with Peter Gabriel showing up to sing the encore with Phil "I Know What I Like".

The Who- Live At Leeds
The Who- Young Man Blues with Keith Moon. I've yet to hear a version which doesn't give me chills.

The extended live version of "Dixie Chicken" from Waiting on Columbus just kills the shorter studio version.

Any of the songs on Talking Heads' Stop Making Sense that originally appeared on Speaking in Tongues, especially "Slippery People" and "Girlfriend Is Better."

And "Hotter Than Hell," which had a plodding, mechanical beat to it on the original studio album.

Yessongs by Yes.

It has a bit of a rough sound to it, but that's what makes it so endearing. You are hearing a band at the absolute peak of their powers.

And it's hard not to be impressed by great music included in a triple gatefold LP sleeve with great artwork by Roger Dean.

Well, about something other than Smiff.

And +1 to Jimbo's Talking Heads nod.

Wilco Kicking Television: Live in Chicago

The Blue Hawaiians Live At The Lava Lounge

Donny Hathaway Live + In Performance

Bevis Frond Live At The Great American Music Hall, San Francisco

Albert Collins & the Icebreakers Live In Japan

I often (though not always) prefer live recordings.

Way too many to list.

Most Grateful Dead
Most Frank Zappa
James Gang - Live
Much Bowie
Guess Who - Live at The Paramount

The Randy California/Ed Cassady late version of Spirit - the various versions of Live At The Rainbow (though really full of guitar overdubs) destroys anything the post original band did in the studio by comparison.

Even Frampton Comes Alive destroys the equivalent studio recordings (though I suspect it's full of overdubs as are many live albums)

Cream tended to be better live (been listening to a lot of Cream lately!)

100's more. (thousands?)
