Reunited Roxy Music Heading Back to the Studio

The great British band Roxy Music, long slated to make their first new studio album since the 1982 classic Avalon, look like they're finally on track to complete the project. As guitarist Phil Manzanera explained to Mix during a recent interview about the new David Gilmour Live in Gdansk CD/DVD (to appear in Mix’s October 2008 issue)—which Manzanera co-produced and played on—work on the new Roxy Music album was originally slated to begin a couple of years ago, “but while I was away [on tour with Gilmour], Bryan Ferry decided to do a Dylan covers album [titled Dylanesque] and go on tour, and then David asked me if I wanted to help him sort out the live material from the tour for a CD set.”

With the Gilmour and Ferry projects now out of the way, the Roxy album went back onto the front-burner again. “We’ve got something like 18 tracks already, but now we’ve got to finish it off,” Manzanera said on September 1. “Everybody’s been getting along very well. It’s me and Andy MacKay, Paul Thompson, Brian Eno, Bryan Ferry and Guy Pratt, who played bass with me and was on David’s tour. Chris Thomas was producing.

“We haven’t done a proper album for more than 20 years, so it’s got to be good. And even though I say we’ve got 18 tracks, we’ve probably got seven really good ones, and we want to have at least 10 really good ones. There’s no point in doing it unless it’s going to be really good. If it isn’t good enough, it won’t come out. We’re trying to be good. The whole record industry is down the tubes, but you still have your self-pride,” he adds with a laugh. “You want to do a good job. Maybe you have to make your money from something else: touring, T-shirts, whatever. But those of us who started with analog and 16 tracks and songs and all that… we want it to be really good; otherwise what’s the point?”

Well, that came to nothing.

Roxy Music Break Up

Roxy Music have been completely inactive for over three-and-a-half years, and guitarist Phil Manzanera says this break is probably going to last forever. "I don't think we're going to do any more shows," he says. "I think our job is done. When we stopped touring in 2011, Andy [Mackay] and I looked at each other and said, 'Our job is done here.'"

There hasn't been a new Roxy Music album since 1982's Avalon, but the group reformed in 2001 and have toured sporadically ever since. "Musicians like to do new things," says Manzanera. "It's unfortunate for the fans, really, because they would like you to play the same old stuff forever and ever. And they go see it and they feel like, 'Man, they aren't as good as they used to be.' I'm very happy doing new things. I've got a couple of albums coming in the next year."

The news for Roxy Music fans isn't all bleak. "We have some fantastic box sets of the first two albums out next year," says Manzanera. "There's all sorts of things; extra [Brian] Eno ingredients and stuff. I'm very excited about it." There's also Bryan Ferry's ongoing solo tour, where he often plays more than a dozen Roxy Music songs a night.

Also, Manzanera may be on the road himself in the near future. The guitarist, who co-produced Pink Floyd's new album The Endless River, plays in the solo band of David Gilmour, who's planning a tour when he finishes his next album. "If he wants me on that tour," says Manzanera. "I'll be there."

I'm debating whether to pick up the Roxy Music Box. I've avoided it so far because I'm not all that into Prog. However, I've heard some cuts from the 801 Live disc and really like them. I'm going to pick that up for sure. What are your thoughts on the Roxy Music? What does it compare to musically? I know it's a sweeping question, but any guidance would be appreciated. Thanks.

If you have the $'s & like Prog & Glam, grab it. The last few albums were soft 80's dance; they did a stylistic 180 degree flip in the 80's.

I find most of there albums indispensable;as far as the 70's core catalog think of Ziggy Stardust as a Sinatra style crooner(if you can picture that) with really odd lyrics & a smoking glam prog band, and you've got early Roxy.

The sound of the box is good; it is superior to the HDCD remasters.

The only Roxy Music I know is Avalon. I didn't even know they were a Prog band in the 70s. I always lumped them in with the 80s New Wave. I should have known better, given I knew Brian Ferry was an older guy and probably not just starting out then. :)

Here's our old thread for the Roxy Music box set that was mentioned above:

The Roxy box is a must own. After seeing Bryan Ferry recently you really see what a influential band they were.

I don't consider Roxy Music to have been a prototypical prog band. They never recorded side-long suites or long solos. More glam rock to me--at least the early 70s albums. The late-70s/early 80s incarnation turned out creamy dance music and gorgeous, lush ballads. I love it all.

Did anyone else notice Phil was talking about the long delayed Deluxe remasters?

Finally!

I've been listening to the Roxy Music station on Pandora, and I'm leaning towards buying it. Mrs. Smiff loves it!

My first exposure to them was Tin Machine's cover of "If There is Something" soon followed by "Love Is The Drug." Only recently have I started hearing more of their dreamy dance stuff, as I've listened to SiriusXM 1stWave. I've really grown to love "More Than This" in recent months.

TM really changed If There Is Something. Almost 2 different songs. I like both, prefer TM's version.

More Than This is easily one of the best pop songs of all time, I could hear it every day more than once.

Totally agree. I didn't hear RM's version until last year and was wondering if I was listening to some joke version and the real one was on another album, like the little kid singing The Guns Of Brixton on Sandinista.

Cool, another Tin Machine fan. I thought I was the only one (other than my late friend, Carol)!
