The Rutles announce details of UK tour

The Rutles have announced details of a UK tour to take place in May.

The Beatles parody group, which was originally formed as a spoof by Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band man Neil Innes and Monty Python comedian Eric Idle, will play 19 shows starting at Exeter Phoenix on May 7 and wrapping up at Liverpool O2 Academy 2 later in the month (May 31).

The band, jokingly referred to as the Pre-Fab Four, were initially conceived for a sketch in Idle's TV show Rutland Weekend Television. They went on to star in the film All You Need Is Cash, which features a cameo from George Harrison, and released a number of albums.

In a press release co-written by Innes, he revealed that his alter-ego Ron Nasty and drummer John Halsey (known in The Rutles as Barrington Womble) would be the only original members of the group taking part in the shows. "It is hereby agreed that, in as much as two of the Artistes heretofore and informally known as 'The Rutles', 'The Pre-Fab Four' or 'Dirk, Nasty, Stig and Barry', shall be appearing live and in person as 'Themselves' (namely Neil and John)," it says.

"And whilst they are appearing as ‘Themselves’ they do so solemnly and without prejudice hereby undertake to use their best endeavors not to make frivolous use of any former silly name, no matter whomsoever, whatsoever, whenever, for ever and ever.”

The Rutles will play:

Exeter Phoenix (May 7)
Stroud Subscription Rooms (8)
Cardiff Globe (9)
Frome Cheese & Grain (10)
Southampton Brook (11)
York Fibbers (14)
Newcastle O2 Academy 2 (15)
Leeds City Varieties Music Hall (16)
Nottingham Rescue Rooms (17)
Didcott Cornerstone (18)
Birmingham Town Hall (21)
London O2 Islington Academy (22)
Farnham Maltings (23)
Bridport Electric Palace (24)
Swansea Garage (25)
Clitheroe Grand (28)
Manchester RNCM Theatre (29)
Glasgow O2 ABC2 (30)
Liverpool O2 Academy 2 (31)

Eric Idle and Neil Innes sadly had a huge falling out years ago, so I guess that's why Eric is not involved.

I just assumed it was because Eric had that commitment with his other group, Wings.

No, no, not Wings. What's that thing that spells the same backwards as forwards? Monty Python, that's it.

I believe Innes and Idle have patched things up. But Idle had absolutely nothing to do with the musical side of the Rutles, so that's probably the main reason he's not involved. What could they do, have him stand onstage and lip sync? On the other hand, I wonder why Rikki Fataar is not participating?

Ollie Halsall, who appeared briefly in the All You Need Is Cash film as Leppo "the fifth Rutle" was actually the voice of Dirk (as well as playing a lot of the instruments on the songs). He passed away in 1992.

On a tangent, If you like the Rutles, I recommend checking out the 60s band of Ollie Halsall and John Halsey, Timebox.

I thought he left the Rutles to form Punk Floyd.

Would the Rutles play any cover songs of George Harrison songs since he was a producer of the original film?

No. They would play Stig O'Hara's classic "Between Us."

With multiple guitar changes mid-song.
