Morrissey cautioned to retire due to health issues

Singer Morrissey has opened up about his recent health woes, revealing he was rushed to hospital with serious internal bleeding and has since been warned to retire from music.

The former the Smiths frontman canceled his North American tour earlier this month after suffering a series of setbacks and illnesses including pneumonia, a stomach ulcer and the throat condition Barrett's oesophagus. He is currently recuperating in Mexico, but has taken time out from his period of rest to detail his ongoing health problems, revealing he suffered so much blood loss it sparked anemia and led to a number of other issues.

Morrissey tells Mexican radio station Reactor 105.7, "I had a very bad time. I had internal bleeding and I was rushed into hospital and I had lost a lot of blood. They tried to patch me together over the following five weeks but it didn't work. ... I was on lots of IV drips for almost five weeks, and each time it seemed as though I was back to robust health I would decline ... I had lost so much blood I had become anemic, but I'm still receiving ongoing treatment and I am very optimistic now.

"It almost became absurd the number of things that happened to me, but everything just attacked me at once. The double pneumonia -- everything was really a result of the fact I had lost so much blood, so the immune defenses were very, very low and couldn't cope with anything, so therefore the slightest gust of wind and I would have a terrible cold."

Asked if he has been advised to retire from life as a pop star as a result of his poor health, the veteran British singer replies, "I have been cautioned to, but it's difficult for me because it's very ingrained in me."

If he had a steak once in awhile, he wouldn't be anemic. :D He does seem to be a very Type A person.

For the vast majority of music fans, Morrissey retired in the 80s after the Smiths broke up anyway. I've tried, really tried, to get into his solo stuff, and have bought it all, but Morrissey without Marr just leaves me cold.

Mike Nelson as Morrissey on MST3K. "This is a song I wrote at a time in my life when I was very, very, very, very sad...breakfast, actually."

+1 :ohyes:

I did like the first couple of solo albums, but I lost interest quickly. I just recently stopped buying everything though.

I love almost everything he's done solo, other than the abysmal Kill Uncle...and even that was livened up considerably into rockabilly songs on the subsequent tour. He's by far my favorite solo artist, and the Smiths my favorite band. I most prefer his late 80s to mid-90s output over anything he's done lately, but I still enjoy his music. I was hoping to see him one more time live before he stops touring, and more, I'd like to see his new material get a record label and get released.

Yep. The first two were pretty great. He's released some quality material after that, but nothing that sticks with me like those two and the Smiths' stuff.

I'm a big Smiths fan and rue that I never saw them live. Loved Morrissey's first few solo albums but he lost me went he got middle aged and seems like a complete grump now.

He was pretty good live back in the day.

I reluctantly went to Staples show after Stooges couldn't make rescheduled date, but went because Patti Smith opened. I'm a long time Smiths fan who saw them twice, and Morrissey solo 3 times. I'm hit and miss with his solo catalog. However the show totally reminded me why I hold him in such high regard musically. He may have had a lot to prove after canceling so many shows, and for me he owned the audience that night.

Highly recommend Live at Earl's Court. Excellent concert recording, and Mozzer does a swell cover of Patti Smith's "Redondo Beach."
