I never thought of Zebra as prog, but this sounds really cool.
I'm afraid if I went it would result in my death when I plummeted overboard after Terry Bozzio finally got sick of me saying, "C'mon, just let a little of that talent rub off on me" and gave me the shove.

Zebra? With the helium vocals?
Yeah Linda. That is the only thing that ruined that band for me.
Randy Jackson is one of the most brilliant guitar players around and Guy Gelso is a killer drummer. When Jackson sang like a normal human being he was great, but that idiotic falsetto ended a great start to a career!
Their covers of bands like Rush, Floyd, ELP, Zeppelin from their early days show their chops. They are close to Prog but more Hard Rock. But oh those horrid helium squeeze me nuts vocals! I hated that!

I saw Zebra many many times at local LI clubs back in their heyday. Brilliant live band that was always a treat to hear. I still play that first album often. Been enjoying their greatest hits album which has alternate versions. Highly recommended.
Randy Jackson plays LI clubs/bars solo these days. Saw him open for Whitesnake at Westbury.

Does anyone have the recent House Of Blues DVD by Zebra a few years ago? I was thinking of getting that but have not.
Hard to believe but I remember reading that the 1983 debut by Zebra was Atlantic's fastest-selling debut album ever for the first few weeks. It did go Gold, but my guess is people were turned off by the vocals. I have that on vinyl.
I keep hoping Rock Candy will remaster the catalogue and was told it may happen. I think everything is OOP on CD and there was some sort of two-fer a few years back.
I also believe Zebra were inducted into the Louisiana (or New Orleans I forget which) Music Hall Of Fame which is where they're from.

I'm glad I'm not the only one to show Zebra some love. I don't think Randy Jackson's high vocals were any more over-the-top than singers like Dio and Dickinson, but other than the brief time in '83 when they were a hot new band, they never had much cred with critics and fans. Their third album, 3.V, was one of my favorites of 1986, and it still sounds great to me today. I'm a huge Zebra fan and have been for 30 years now. Since they were described early on as "Zeppelin meets Yes" (which isn't a bad description), they should fit nicely on this cruise.
As for this cruise, it might possibly be the most male-populated ocean liner of all time.

Did not know about the Zebra DVD or that the GH had alternate versions. Sounds like I need to look for some stuff. I love the first Zebra album and still listen to it fairly often. The vocals never bothered me. I did pick up the live album a couple years back.

When I worked at Atlantic Records in the late 80s & early 90s, I briefly became friendly with Randy & Felix from Zebra. Had some fun backstage times with them at Club Bene in New Jersey. How Randy can continue to hit those high notes even today is nothing short of amazing. I was told that he really took care of his voice, before & after shows, and it pays off.

Rich: You think Dio was over the top? He was always restrained and classy to me and did not sing in a cheesy high register that I can ever remember. It was always about control of his voice and his power was used at the right times. The lyrics got corny at times but never the voice.

I didn't think Dio was over the top necessarily, but he was very dramatic and hit some amazing high notes, much like Randy Jackson. When I heard the first Zebra album I assumed he was singing through some kind of device to make his voice that high, but that's just the sound of his falsetto. Maybe some people were turned off by that sound, but I don't see it as a gimmick. I suppose people felt the same way about Eddie Van Halen & Randy Rhoads with their fingertapping technique, like it wasn't really guitar playing. In my eyes (and ears), Randy Jackson is one of the most impressive vocalists I've heard, and the fact that he also wrote killer songs and played guitar with the best of them makes him even better. It's too bad they've been mostly forgotten by everyone other than the faithful.

Hard to believe Randy Jackson also played with the reformed Jefferson Airplane in 1989. He is such an incredible guitar player and Guy Gelso is an unbelievable drummer. They were doomed to one hit wonder status but they are so much better than that.
I never did get the reunion album Zebra IV which came out maybe around 2003 or so-was that any good? Fans seem to think so.

It always sounded like a Frankie Valli falsetto to me, rather than just reaching for higher notes like Dio and so many other singers in the genre. Not necessarily bad -- obviously he's got a great voice -- but jarring, like it didn't belong with that style of music.

Pete, Zebra IV is a very good album, and it was a pleasant surprise to finally hear some new music from them after so many years. I don't have the emotional connection to that record like I do to the first three, but it's worth getting and can probably be found pretty cheap. Did you ever hear Randy Jackson's short-lived China Rain album? When Zebra was still signed to Atlantic in the late-80s but past their sell-by date, the label had him put together a hair metal band. There's one song I really like from that album ("I Loved, You Lied"), but the rest is pretty forgettable. Also, I had no idea that Randy played with the Airplane during that reunion era. I had that LP for years but only listened to it once and eventually got rid of it.
Linda, I completely understand that reaction to Randy Jackson's falsetto. For me it worked and made them unique, but I knew they weren't for everyone.

His falsetto worked better live in concert during that period. I would actually drive miles to see the band play places like Hammerhead's out in Islip NY all the way from Queens NY. Thats how good they were.

The House Of Blues DVD is imaginatively titled "Zebra" and was filmed in 2006 issued in 2008. It has a great set list:
As I Said Before Wait Until The Summer's Gone Light Of My Love K.K. Is Hiding When You Get There The La La Song Bears But No More One More Chance Tell Me What You Want Arabian Nights My Life Has Changed No Tellin' Lies Who's Behind The Door Free Take Your fingers From My Hair

Pete, I love the Zebra DVD but my big complaint about the set list was no songs from 3.V, which I absolutely love. One of my best memories when I was friendly with them and used to see them at Clube Bene in NJ a lot was a night where I asked Randy if they could play "Hard Living Without You," having never heard it live before...and they obliged. Some fans weren't thrilled with the slick production of that album, but I loved it, and song for song it's as good as their debut.
