I'm looking for modern bands, such as Wolfmother and the Black Keys, that could be in a playlist next to classic rock bands like Led Zeppelin, the Beatles, AC/DC, the Rolling Stones, etc. without seeming out of place or jarring.

Any suggestions?

Buy Classic Rock Magazine. While the articles are mostly about old bands, there is a lot of info about modern bands that fit in as well. The new release review section is usually 8-12 pages, and it comes with a compilation CD of modern bands. This is how I first heard of bands like Band of Skulls, Foxy Shazam, Rival Sons, Lucero, Alberta Cross, Jim Jones Revue, etc.

Vintage Trouble has a classic sound:

The 286 sounds like The Move / early ELO:

Rival Sons (opening for Sabbath this year) and The Answer.

You will enjoy the hell out of both who have a vintage Hard Rock sound.

I also suggest Black Stone Cherry and Blackberry Smoke.

Panic at the Disco have a sort of Beatlesque sound. Not too modern, but the Black Crows would fit a playlist that included the Stones and other 60s Blues Rock bands.

I do like the Black Crowes, Jeff, and agree with you -- however, I don't think of them as modern, as they have been around for a while (not saying you're wrong, just sharing my perception).

Thanks everyone, looks like I have some nice leads to check out!

http://undergroundgarage.com/ is a great starting point.

Not quite the Arena Rock sound you might be specifying, but here are some I really like:

Doesn't have to be arena rock -- stuff like CSN, John Fogerty and Neil Young are cool too.

Another vote for The Strypes. Also, The Shazam.

I'm at work, so can't do the youtube links, but in addition to some of those mentioned, try:

Airborne

One Bad Son

The Lazys

or, and depending on how far back you want to go, Buckcherry obviously counts. So do the Eagles of Death Metal.

Amazon says people who bought Rival Sons also bought Blues Pills and Motor Sister, who have a classic rock vibe to them.

Me personally, I dislike Blue Pills (the band and the pills).

Also, some excellent 80's influenced acts from the 2000's I'd highly suggest include The Bravery, The Horrors. Bloc Party, Phoenix and I still love The Strokes (more of a late 70's/early 80's vibe).

There's so much good new music.

Charles Bradley does an AMAZING cover of Heart Of Gold. I was astonished to discover it was recorded in 2011 and not 1972.

Big fan of them -- I buy every album right away and think the band improves with each one.

Oh, and I forgot Royal Blood. They're good too.

and if you're bringing in the late 80's / early 90's stuff into play (the Strokes), then you'd have to add The Vines, The Hives, the Detroit Cobras, and the White Stripes. That Jack White kid might be okay some day.
