Before the solo careers of Peter Gabriel and Phil Collins, and long before “I Can’t Dance,” Genesis were a cultishly beloved British prog band. The band’s arguable masterpiece was 1974′s The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway, a double concept album that was Gabriel’s last with the group.

It turns 40 in November, and the band, which has been dormant for years, could be doing something anniversary-related soon. Earlier this summer Gabriel, Collins, Mike Rutherford, Tony Banks, and Steve Hackett all appeared together for the first time in forever in a promotional photo for an upcoming BBC documentary on the group. Now the Genesis Facebook page has just unveiled a new logo for the band and promises “some exciting Genesis news here tomorrow.”

But what could that be? A reissue? A Broadway show? Phil Collins recently announced a return to the stage for the first time in a few years, but if he was going to be doing old-school Genesis shows, he’d have to play drums, something he hasn’t done in years. Speculate away in the comments section, but we’ll find out soon enough.

Steve Hackett has slammed the Genesis documentary that brought the five classic-era members back together, calling it a biased piece of work.

He says the on-screen version of Together And Apart, broadcast over the weekend, failed to live up to the description he’d been given before he took part.

The guitarist understood the film would give equal coverage to his band and subsequent solo career, along with those of Peter Gabriel, Phil Collins, Mike Rutherford and Tony Banks.

Hackett says: “It’s certainly a biased account of Genesis history, and totally ignores my solo work. It does not deliver the theme of ‘together and apart.’

“In interview I spoke at length as much about my solo career as my time in Genesis, but was not given any editorial involvement. I know the documentary will soon be on sale, but I won’t be selling it via my own website.”

The film is tied in with the band’s R-KIVE retrospective package. Hackett says: “The box set represents us all equally; the documentary does the opposite.”

He’s just completed work on his next solo album, and embarks on his final run of Genesis Revisited shows later this month.

Meanwhile, former bandmate Phil Collins has discussed his near-fatal six-month battle with a drink problem as a result of boredom.

He announced his retirement in 2010, with the intention of spending more time with his young children. But when his ex-wife moved with them from Switzerland to the USA, Collins found himself with too much time on his hands.

He tells the Daily Mail: “I didn’t go around rolling drunk. But I just started to drink. Not working and not having the kids, I guess, left a big void.”

His wine habit led to pancreatitis – but it’s in his past now. “I went to a couple of specialists, and I don’t drink any more,” he says. “I’ve never fallen off the wagon; I’ve just been lucky.”

Collins will play a charity show in Miami in December, but he’s abandoned plans to stage a fully-fledged comeback, reporting that he’s “not ready” after a month of “exploratory rehearsals” with a band.

Drummer Jason Bonham, who took part, said last night: “Now Phil's talked about it, I guess it’s okay to say I had three fantastic weeks playing drums for one of my heroes, and with such a group of amazing musicians.”

Phil looks a million years old one and looks to be in poor health. A shame as he was once such a vital person.

I agree with Steve, how do they leave out his solo work which has been fantastic for many many years.

And he's the one keeping the music alive.

Shameful, but perhaps the DVD will be longer and include that portion?

I will watch on Showtime this Friday night for sure.

Invisible Touch, Throwing It All Away, Against All Odds, In the Air Tonight, Sledgehammer, I Can't Dance, In Your Eyes...just a few of the songs that defined a generation from an iconic band and its individual members who have defied genre over their nearly five-decade run, both together and apart. GENESIS - SUM OF THE PARTS, a 90-minute documentary premiering tonight, October 10th at 8 p.m. (ET/PT) on SHOWTIME, reunites the multi-Platinum-selling, Grammy-winning, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame-inducted band to tell personal accounts of their rise to fame and fortune, first with Peter Gabriel and later Phil Collins as lead vocalists, and through their respective solo careers. Made with the full cooperation of the band, the documentary features previously unseen archive material and rare performance footage illuminating their storied trajectory.

GENESIS - SUM OF THE PARTS features core band members Tony Banks, Phil Collins, Peter Gabriel, Steve Hackett and Mike Rutherford discussing the backstories of their creating more than 15 albums (selling some 130 million worldwide) - from their beginnings as songwriters in the late 1960s to their full-blown, stadium-sell-out, MTV-fueled success of the '70s and '80s to their final incarnation as prog-rock giants in the '90s. Throughout various band member departures and returns, Genesis never ceased to both thrill and confuse their die-hard fans while attracting new disciples with their ever-evolving, dynamic, pop-rock music style. The documentary seeks to indoctrinate the next generation of Genesis fans and remind young and old alike of their legacy and long-standing influence.

I really enjoyed watching the Genesis documentary last night. However, I think it was too short by 30-60 minutes. They had to gloss over the albums very quickly. I don't remember if Wind & Wuthering was even mentioned. None of the live albums were. Speaking of no mention, there wasn't a hint about the Calling All Stations album and lineup. That would have been interesting for Tony & Mike to address (What was good about it? What went wrong? How did it feel to pull the plug on Genesis?), but it was like it never happened. Also, I would have liked to have seen more about what Anthony Phillips and Steve Hackett did post-Genesis. Other than that, I thought it was well done. I learned that Tony Banks is a Grumpy Gus and that being a Genesis fan is considered uncool in some circles. I still think the Eagles doc is the gold standard as thorough history of a band, but I'd certainly recommend this to anyone.

Didn't see it yet-put it on the DV-R.

I am stunned they ignored the Ray Wilson era because each comp includes songs from that time and the VH1 Behind The Music special DID cover it.

That's a joke.

Maybe the DVD is longer?

That is weird on the live albums. I think that the first one, "Live" is the 2nd best Genesis album after Selling England.

Genesis guitarist Mike Rutherford admits the band regrets not filming their 1982 reunion show with Peter Gabriel.

The Six Of The Best concert in Milton Keynes came about after former frontman Gabriel needed help in paying off debts accrued by the financial failure of his Womad festival.

Rutherford tells Rolling Stone: “We did it on my birthday. I mainly remember the incredible mud and rain.

“Years later I thought back and realised we made a mistake not filming it. The feeling was that we shouldn’t record it because it wouldn’t be great live. There were rough edges.”

He reflects: “We should have done it anyway. It was a moment we should have captured, warts and all.”

The guitarist has similar feelings about the band’s 1974-75 tour, on which they played The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway in full at each show.

Rutherford says: “When it worked it was really good. There were nights when not everything worked, but the energy carried it through.

“It’s a shame we never filmed it – but people just didn’t film much in those days.”

Mike Rutherford says Genesis agreed with Steve Hackett when he said documentary film Together And Apart was a “biased account” of the band’s history.

He’s revealed they demanded changes after seeing the first edit to give him more screen time.

But he rejects the idea that Hackett has any reason to feel marginalised from the band he left in 1977.

Rutherford tells TeamRock: “The BBC documentary was a nice thing to do, although I know it upset Steve, and I tend to agree with him. I emailed him to say that.

“That wasn’t our fault. We weren’t entirely in charge. The first cut was shocking – Steve was barely in anything. So we said it wasn’t right and he’s in the second version a lot more.”

Hackett has suggested in the past that there was always some distance between him and the rest of Genesis. Rutherford says: “Steve has always felt a little bit left out, but it’s hard. I went to school with Peter Gabriel and Tony Banks so there’s a different sense of history there.

“I always felt Steve pulled away for his solo career. That was his call – I’ve no problem with that, but it was difficult, and very odd timing.”

Asked about 1982 concert Six Of The Best, the reunion with Gabriel to help him out of a financial problem, which only featured Hackett at the end, Rutherford says: “We were in the middle of a Genesis tour. People forget the idea was very last-minute. Just making it happen in the first place was very tough.”

For the life of me, I don't understand why they don't dig into the vaults and start putting out live stuff. I'm listening to the Chicago radio show (from ATTWT in 1978) right now and it amazes me how hot those guys were before they went very commercial. I also have a well-recorded show from the Abacab tour in Frankfurt that represents the show better than TSL did.

Banks has said that there's a ton of live stuff. Why not release it? At least do it before we all croak.

They were ALWAYS great live.

The Invisible Touch tour was one of the best they ever did and the reunion tour blew away most reunion tours.

There are so many FM and soundboard shows they really should get those out to the fans.

Genesis were one of the greatest live acts ever because they were so dedicated to music and were never fucked up on stage.

The sober part is a big positive. I['m not much of a fan after the first couple Collins albums. Got too commercial for my taste.

Saw them in 84, 87 and 92. I gobbled them up when I discovered them in '82 while in the service. I was only 19 at the time and I was entranced by the keyboard wizardry even though I like hard rock and metal most of the time.

Pissed me off.... the closest they got to me in '07 was Chicago and I'm 8 hrs away. :D

Bingo!

Although mine is 1976-82 as A Trick of the Tail is my favorite album.

This happened tonight over in England, a sort of reunion to promote Richard McPhail's new book about Genesis.
