This was one of the albums (along with Jimmy Page & Black Crowes) that caused a major stink among retailers in 2000.
A start-up internet-only label MusicMaker.com had exclusive rights on these 2CD live albums and The Who album was never released in any other way although the Page/Crowes album came out on TV later in the year.
I've never haedr this album but I always wanted to get it because the 1999 shows were so damn good. The recordings cover the 2 shows at the House Of Blues in Chicago and 2 shows right before Christmas at the Shepherd's Bush in London.
I recall purchasers also could arrange the order of songs they wanted for their CDs but I don't remember if different songs were involved.
I remember reading that these were mediocre, muddy soundboard type recordings, but I have never heard the album myself.
The album has long been OOP but can be had for $25 or so usually, sometimes less.

I have this album but haven't listened to it in a long time. The only thing that I can reiterate from a previous post is that the band was pretty hot with Zak on the drums and could blow younger bands off the stage any night of the week.

This of course, was a very emotional concert organized by Paul McCartney after the terrorist attacks of 9-11. There were some great performances, some headscratchers, and some very subdued ones understandably. But, without a doubt The Who stole the show. Everyone there knew it and so did anyone watching and any critics.
It was great to see them kicking ass (if I'm allowed to say something so unhip) and waking the place up. And they do so with the utmost respect. Jon Carin (from Pink Floyd/Roger Waters) filled in on keyboards for Rabbit and Simon was added back as a second guitarist and has been there ever since.
This would be the last US show with The Ox alive and in many ways, the last Who show if you will.
They performed 4 classics in "Who Are You", "Baba O'Riley", "Behind Blue Eyes" (not on the CD) and "Won't Get Fooled Again".
The show raised over $35 million.

Yeah, I don't know what it is about this particular performance--these are songs they've performed countless times--but they were absolutely electrifying that night. Probably just the sheer emotion of it all.

It starts out with just Roger and Pete on acoustic guitar, and slowly builds to include the whole band. Pretty cool performance--I know Pete and Roger have both performed this separately, but this is the only version I've heard officially credited to the Who.

A very emotional night and it was wonderful to see The Who come through in a big NYC moment.

We watched the show in the store I owned when I was working that night and aside from when Bowie started the show it was the only moment when everyone just stopped and watched. I don't what it was either, because The Who were dynamite. Maybe it was The Ox's farewell and we didn't know it yet.

IMO, the best single place to get a Who comp is right here. It sounds great (at least I think so), and aside from omitting "Relay" it has a very, very well thought-out track listing spanning their entire career.
The resurgence of The Who from 1999-2002 was a glorious and most surprising thing indeed and this comp went Platinum in the US (despite the inferior track listing) and the upcoming tour was almost totally sold out.
What I love about this comp is you get 60s, 70s and 80s Who in all the right places.
Sure, there's a track or two one could gripe about, but this baby is great. I love the UK version (the one I have) which adds plenty more 80s tracks, all of which were either US Radio Hits, Hot 100 Singles or both!
I saw the tour but was very heartbroken at seeing the band without The Ox who died on the eve of the tour. The show was actually very good (as was Robert Plant), but it stopped truly being The Who for me right here.
What was especially aggravating was that I read an interview with Entwistle around the time of The Concert For New York in 2001 and he said he had written material for a new Who album that was finally going to get going in 2002. It never happened and we never did get an album with The Ox again. Shame on Pete for that.
However, I will not forget how great it was to be a fan again from 1999-2002.

I bought this strictly for the bonus disc. There was no other reason for me to do so.

In addition to John's songs for the never to be recorded Who album from this period I recall Roger also stating that he'd done some writing for a new album. Too bad that never came to fruition. If it was Pete's insecurities that stopped that, then shame on him. There was never anything written which stated a Who album had to be entirely or mostly written by Pete, particularly at that late stage of the game.

Maybe it's me, I know, I'm a dork, but I was more interested in the solo stuff Pete was selling on his website during this era--the Lifehouse box, "Scoop 3", the reissues of his Baba albums. I was also picking up the Who material that was coming out during this period, of course--the 2-disc deluxe editions started up in 2001--but I never really paid much attention to the whole Who reunion tour thing. But that's just me--again, I'm a dork. Fighting crowds and shelling out wads of cash to see an arena rock spectacle is an activity that just stopped appealing to me at some point.

At some point word began to circulate about an upcoming Who studio album, and I probably stopped wondering if Pete was ever going to do any new solo material.

It took a long time for me to reach my limit, but about 3 or 4 years ago, I too stopped shelling out for arena shows, or any shows for that matter, with rare exception. The Cream reunion, Roger's tour of 3 or 4 (?) years ago and the Tommy show from last year are the most notable of those exceptions.

I bought this just for the bonus disc, hoping that the version of Magic Bus would be the long version on the LP of MBB&B. It wasn't.

It was kind of cool to hear the "I keep going forward" version of Substitute, though.

I never got this one and it was definitely an afterthought coming 3 years after the actual show in November of 2000. The 3rd disc does include a few songs from Feb. 8, 2002-the last show The Ox would play.
I really dislike the whole "special guests" thing which is why I never got this on CD or DVD.
I'm sure it's OK, but is this something I really need to own? Anyone?
