aka The Groupie Song

I normally do this on Wednesdays, but waited until today in respect of Davy Jones.

Tip of the hat to Kid Bailey for this one.
If anyone has more suggestions, send me an IM.

I still get sad over the loss of Karen Carpenter. When I think of this song, I hear her voice.

Gotta go with The Carpenters. They may not have written the song but they made it theirs.

I had to vote for the Carpenters but that Sonic Youth version is really something else!

The Carpenters were the first musical artists that I loved back when I first really began listening to pop and rock music in the early '70s at 9 or 10 years old (before I fell big for the Beatles), and this song has to be in my top 3 of their songs.

Rita coolidge did a nice job, but I went with The Carpenters. I think it's actually one of their best.
Bonnie hated it because Richard changed "I can hardly wait to sleep with you again" to "I can hardly wait to be with you again". It's still a great record.
I didn't know Peggy Lee had done it. I wil seek that out.
Thanks, Charles.

I went for "Other"...and that would be Luther Vandross.

Carpenters for me. Karen had such a pure voice.

I gotta go with Bette Midler. I like the Carpenters, and their version is excellent, but I like what Bette brings to the song. It's earthier than the Carpenters' version.

BTW, it's on her first album, a real gem, very underrated. Even though I don't really care for Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy.

Can't beat the Carpenters' version. It was their absolute career peak. The innocence in Karen's voice (and their image) gives added resonance to those lyrics.

That said, Raquel Welch and and John Belushi (as Joe Cocker) did a pretty amazing/hilarious version on season 1 of SNL. Unfortunately the producers of SNL are asshats about allowing clips online so I can't find a clip anywhere, but here's a photo: Image
