Musician presses CD and vinyl record into a single disc

I’d never heard of musician Jeff Mills before today. He describes himself as “techno/classical/experimental,” and that’s a perfect description of what he’s pulled off with his new release titled “The Occurrence.”

With this album, Mills has become the first-known person to meld the analog and the digital world — musically speaking, anyway — into a single product. One side of the album’s five-inch disc is a standard compact disc that plays in any CD player. Flip it over, though, and it’s a vinyl record that you can play on your turntable.

Same recording, just two different formats depending on whether you're feeling like exploring your wholesome wheat side or your frosted side.

The so-called “hybrid CD” is the first of its kind that I (or anyone else I can find) am aware of. I’m so impressed with the idea that I kind of want to buy the album just so I can have one, even though the music doesn’t really interest me and I don’t own a turntable.

That said, what I’m really holding out for is something even cooler: A combination SD card and 8-track tape. Let’s make it happen, folks!

Actually, I'm surprised it took this long.

With all the unprotected digisleeve packaging crap companies are using lately, the vinyl side will already be unplayable when taken out for the first time.

If this is truly an "album" I can't even imagine how crappy the vinyl side must sound like. Remember that even singles are normally pressed on 7" vinyl. I used to have a 5" Squeeze single on vinyl and while it was a cool thing to have, it sounded awful.

I can just imagine trying to play it on an automatic turntable and it gets about 30 seconds into playing, and the arm picks up.

Why doesn't Jeff Mills simply sell the music on CD and seperatly on LP ?

This format won't work.

Would anyone be talking about him if he did that?

I was thinking similar: even without crap packaging, it would get trashed just by the side not being played being scratched on the turntable or cd clamp.

Here's a slightly earlier VinylDisc (colloquially referred to as a "VD") than the Elvis one. Check out this unboxing video for a Mars Volta promo VD from June 2009:

Jimbo will brag about his CD collection, yes.

His VD collection, not so much.

Could be worse. If I was named "Billy Joel" I would either be Willy or William!
