Rodriguez, 27, went 1-for-12 with a walk and eight strikeouts with the Pirates last season after being selected with the first overall pick in the Rule 5 draft by Pittsburgh. (The Mets took Brad Emaus and Pedro Beato in the same Rule 5 draft.) Rodriguez was returned to Cleveland on April 29, then subsequently reacquired by the Pirates on June 21 for cash. Between Double-A Altoona and a pair of Triple-A teams in 2011, Rodriguez hit .258 with seven homers and 30 RBIs in 295 at-bats while playing 37 games at second base, 23 games at shortstop and eight games at third base. He primary is viewed as a solid, versatile defensive player. He had been in minor league camp with the Pirates this spring training. Watch out, Phillies!

I don't think Bud Selig will ever do this, but I'd like MLB to give teams that won world championships before 1967 the option to have retroactive trophies made to commemorate those championships. If that were the case, that means Nats fans can see SOME vestige of their one shot of glory many, many years ago even if there has to be a small sign next to the trophy which says "On permanent loan from the Minnesota Twins."*
*Somebody bought the copy of the Magna Carta that was displayed in the National Archives from the Ross Perot estate, and then gave it back as a "permanent loan". That's my idea of acknowledging that while I consider the Nats to be a continuation of the same team Walter Johnson once played for, technically it is a different franchise.
**If Bud Selig were to decide that the Montreal Expos were the 1994 world champions since they had the best record in baseball when the lockout (not strike) took place, I would let that trophy be displayed at Olympic Stadium or Bell Centre under a similar "permanent loan."
***Last opinion on this subject. Although the Giants have over the decades claimed to be "1904 World Champions", in my opinion they forfeited the right to that title when they refused to play the World Series that year.

Looks like the A's and Mariners are both 1-1. And virtually all of the US didn't see a second of it. Nice work Selig.

The first actual game I will watch in full will probably be the Red Sox game on May 12th.

I just read that Michael Pineda is having arm pain and going for an MRI. Yikes!

I hated this trade (not because of Montero who we SHOULD have chosen for Cliff Lee instead of Smoak), but for losing Pineda. While I only wish Pineda the best, this story gives me hope that maybe we didn't blow it yet AGAIN.

The Mets pitching staff as of opening day isn't half bad if it stays healthy:
Santana Dickey Gee Neise Pelfrey
They are still destined for last place but at least if they can stay interesting till August, that would be a bonus.

The Sox season looks like it has the potential to start just like last year's finished. Bobby Valentine looks like he may indeed be a disaster. He's a buffoon who doesn't know when to shut his mouth and, other than Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe, the sports media here have already turned against him. He's getting murdered on local sports talk. Now Andrew Bailey and Josh Becket both have thumb injuries.
Oh boy. Hopefully, the Bruins will make a nice long playoff run.
