I knew about Sean Penn - Mystic River (2003) and Milk(2008) - and Forest Whitaker - The Last King of Scotland - but had to hunt for Nicolas Cage - Adaptation.
Actually, I had to remind myself which movies they won it for, but had a strong belief they had both won for something.
But yeah, I had a "Cage was in that movie?" moment. I hunted for some images online, and yeah, he was, though I was surprised.
nominated for the one you said, but won for another movie.

Another Big Brother is come and gone and none of my favorite players (Tyler, Christmas, Memphis) won anything in the end. It was the so-so Cody and annoying as hell Davonne. Not the best season I've ever seen but not the worst either. Here's hoping next year is better.

I am thrilled that the eternally annoying Nicole did not win. And what is with Enzo and his never ending yo yo yo’s? Isn’t that dude nearly 40 talking like a street punk. Jeez.

We finished season two of Yellowstone tonight (Paramount Network) streaming thru the Peacock streaming app. I was able to sign up for a free week and was able to finish the show. Great season full of twist and turns, a pretty violent show it turns out. Very addictive and the wife also loves the show.
Now we can watch season three via the Paramount Network streaming app.
Started the Netflix series Black Summer tonight (that one is just for me).

Caught The Strokes on SNL last night and enjoyed their first song “The Adults Are Talking” from the new album. Both songs performed were very good (“Bad Decisions”). Their lead singer has an unsual voice that works for the songs but he isn’t the most charismatic on stage.
John Mullvaney was the host and he always brings in some good ideas. The Times Square skit was a winner.

The Queen's Gambit is a fictional story that follows the life of an orphan chess prodigy named Beth Harmon from the age of eight to twenty-two during her quest to become the world's greatest chess player in a male dominated arena, all while struggling with emotional issues, and fighting her drug and alcohol dependency. The story begins in the mid-1950s and proceeds into the 1960s.
Netflix original, 7 episodes - about 1 hour each, though usually less, it's pretty good.
If you at least know the rules of the game of chess, this might interest you more than others, but it's not necessary to know the rules to enjoy the mini series. But at least here, unlike many depictions of people playing chess on TV or in the movies, they actually know how to play and don't make illegal moves.
I suppose it's a period piece - so you might enjoy depictions of life in the 50's and 60's, too, though it's not like she travels the world or country and see's a lot of it. She plays chess - from her early days in an orphanage to her early twenties in a competition held in Russia against the world's very best, and she plays in an alarmingly and impressive way that would make most "decent" chess players cringe in embarrassment when they realize, by comparison, they are so bad at a game they really enjoy and where they usually kicked ass, but when confronted by Beth they finally taste the other side of it.
Elizabeth is a prodigy - though there are others in the world like that - they are just exceedingly rare. But unlike most of those guys, Beth is at first discouraged from this pursuit after a lone janitor at the orphanage, who studies chess in his spare time, teaches her the game and sets her on a road to possible greatness.
I enjoyed the trip - you might too - and it doesn't take too much time. Less than 7 hours.
The Queen's Gambit is awesome! It would have made an excellent 2 hour+ movie but we get treated to a 7 hour serial that is just out of this world. Anya Taylor-Joy is spot on as a young female chess prodigy.
Don't miss it if you have Netflix.

Saturday Night Live has announced that Foo Fighters will be the musical guest for this week's Dave Chappelle hosted episode! Let's hope there is a final result by airtime.

Got to say I'm really enjoying the 2020 COVID Rock N Roll Hall Of Fame Inductions on HBO. Yes it can't have live presentations but the background pieces are just awesome. Really love that the Doobies got in (my wife was a bit shocked when I told her some people here felt they weren't deserving) and of course one of my top 10 groups of all-time Depeche Mode. The Zoom meeting between the 3 members is priceless if you are a fan. Even ZZ Top’s Billy Gibbons says good things about the group in the band bio even though he plays completely different music.

Good news tonight for people who want to have HBO MAX play on their ROKU tv, Amazon Fire Stick has added the app and there is now also a work around for ROKU members who don't use Amazon but ROKU directly (like me). If you have the HBO MAX app on your Ipad or Iphone, you can now use Apple Airplay to cast onto a ROKU style tv like TCL models.
I tried it a minute ago playing Raised By Wolves on the HBO MAX app and then using Apple Airplay to stream it to my tv, worked perfectly.
I would guess eventually the HBO MAX streaming app will be added to ROKU proper but at least this is something.

I don't know if I'll watch the series as I don't have Netflix and won't go out of my way to catch Netflix programming, but the fact that agadmator has done analysis of a couple games from the series has me interested.
