Ryan Dunn, star of MTV’s “Jackass,” was killed this morning in a one-car accident in West Goshen, Pennsylvania.
The first reports began pouring onto Twitter around 9:47 a.m. after April Margera, mother of “Jackass” star and Dunn’s friend Bam Margera, called into Philadelphia’s “Preston and Steve” radio show to report the death. Twitter messages also contained links to a local CBS Philadelphia story about a 3 a.m. accident that killed two unnamed men along West Goshen’s Route 322, as well as a picture of what was supposedly the remains of Dunn’s car.
TMZ confirmed Dunn’s death, posting the same photo and reporting that the MTV star and a passenger were killed in the wreck. The second victim has not been named and there is no word on who was driving.
The cause of the crash has not been released, though Dunn posted an image to Twitter (below) around 11 p.m. Sunday night – four hours before the crash – showing he and two friends drinking. Unconfirmed reports say Dunn’s vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed just before the accident.
Dunn rose to fame on the MTV stunt show “Jackass” with personalities Johnny Knoxville, Steve-O, Chris Pontius, Raab Himself and Bam Margera. He appeared in all three “Jackass” films, and was a regular on Margera’s MTV show “Viva La Bam.” Most recently, Dunn competed for charity on the NBC game show “Minute to Win It.”
He was 34 years old.

I've never seen "Jackass" (TV or movie versions), but the reputation of the show turned me off completely. However, I just happened to turn on "Minute To Win It" Saturday night and saw Ryan and Steve-O playing for charity. I was surprised to see their level of commitment for raising money for their respective charities, so they made a very positive impression on me. Thus, it was unsettling to me to learn about Ryan's death yesterday. I think he had more to offer the world than "Jackass". Sad.

http://www.reuters.com/article/2011/06/ ... 1H20110621Roger Ebert defends Tweet about "Jackass" star
By Alex Dobuzinskis
LOS ANGELES | Tue Jun 21, 2011 6:24pm EDT
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Film critic Roger Ebert on Tuesday defended an admonition against drunk driving he posted on Twitter in response to the death of "Jackass" star Ryan Dunn, who was photographed drinking before his car crash.
But the influential Chicago Sun-Times movie critic, who has come under fire from "Jackass" star Bam Margera and online commentators, also expressed regret that his Twitter one-liner, which was posted on Monday, was considered cruel.
Dunn died Monday and Ebert tweeted, "Friends don't let jackasses drink and drive."
Dunn, 34, a bearded daredevil who co-starred in the "Jackass" movie franchise featuring pranks and stunts, was killed along with his passenger Zachary Hartwell when the car Dunn was driving careened off a highway in Pennsylvania and burst into flames, police said.
Authorities will not know for certain if alcohol played a role in the crash until at least four weeks, when they have the results of toxicology tests, according to media reports.
But Dunn posted a photo to Twitter shortly before the crash, which seemed to show him drinking with friends.
Ebert wrote an online blog post on Tuesday to explain and defend the tweet that some had considered insensitive.
The critic began by offering his sympathy to the family and friends of Dunn and Hartwell.
"I also regret that my tweet about the event was considered cruel," Ebert said in his post. "It was not intended as cruel. It was intended as true."
Ebert noted that media reports have said Dunn drank three light beers and three shots before he took the wheel.
"I don't know what happened in this case, and I was probably too quick to tweet," Ebert wrote. "That was unseemly."
Nevertheless, Ebert ended his post on Tuesday with the catchphrase, "Friends don't let friends drink and drive."
The critic's original tweet drew an angry response from Margera, who as a young man made home video stunts with Dunn and later starred with him in three "Jackass" movies.
"I just lost my best friend, I have been crying hysterical for a full day and (expletive) roger ebert has the gall to put in his 2 cents," Margera wrote.

Why are these guys worrying about what Ebert thinks or says? Go grieve. Of course people will comment when a guys drinks and then drives over 100MPH and kills himself and another.

I'm glad he didn't kill some innocent kid who happened to be driving sober.

The passenger was an armed forces veteran. Dunn was driving 130.
I agree with Ebert.

I'll reserve judgment on the drinking part until proven by autopsy, but at this point that appears to be a mere formality and if so, he was correct, he was a jackass. I will give him credit for making a lot of people laugh, which in today's "you either agree with me or you're a POS" society, is a very underrated service. I have zero problem with what Roger Ebert said and most people don't.

Ebert may have been quick to tweet his opinion, but I'm with him.

Unfortunately a typical failure. A guy around here was sentenced yesterday to up to 15 years in prison for drunk driving. For his 14th and 15th convictions for DUI.
15 convictions and apparently still had his license. He had worked out a plea bargain for 2.5-5 years for both of these (he pleaded guilty). The judge rejected the plea deal as too lenient.
This jagoff had THREE DUIs in a 32-day period in 1993.
And he can get his license back. Granted, not until 2043 (he'll be 90), but he's still ELIGIBLE TO GET HIS LICENSE BACK.
