I'll respectfully disagree, although this is going to sound strange given how nasty the first round has been.
I miss the old, old playoff format, the one that went out in the early 90s, I believe. For those who didn't pay attention then, this is how the first round worked (in general - sometimes arena availability changed things) - the first night, one conference played game one of all four series. The next night, the other conference played all four of theirs, PLUS all four game twos of the first conference. All of the series, pending arenas, played their first four games in five nights - two games here in two days, a day off, two games there in two days. It was intense, and as high as the emotions ran, it was rarely the kind of stuff we've seen this year. Fights, yes, but not the disrespectful stuff.
Of course, the downside was the lack of national TV. But you didn't have TV dictating when the games were played as much. Plusses, minuses...

In the third period, the Pens net was knocked off its moorings, with play in that end. Not slightly off the moorings - it was a good three-four feet behind the goal line. With play in that end. And it seemed like it was 10-15 seconds before the whistle blew. I'd love to see where the officials where and what they were looking at, because there's no way they should have missed that. Canucks up on the Kings 1-0 in the second - so far, the move to Schneider is working brilliantly. And as I finish typing that, he makes a nice save on Mike Richards. Alan

Alan 1-1 Kings-Nyucks going into OT. My pregame 2-1 Kings in OT prediction has a 50-50 shot.

Alan Whether it be the NHL or NBA, teams that played the day or night before will show signs of fatigue near the end of the game the next day or night. That isn't either league putting their best product out there and it's ripping off the fans. JMO.

Down go the Nyuks at home in OT. Good job Kings, winning in 5. Gets even tougher playing a solid Blues team next.

Goodnight, Blackhawks. 1-0 into the third period, then it fell apart. Another stupid, disrespectful boarding from behind penalty led to another Coyotes goal, and then the wheels came off.
So the second round in the West is set - Phoenix vs. Nashville, Los Angeles vs. St. Louis.
The Rangers hold off Ottawa to force game 7 on Thursday.
So we've got NJ trying to win game 6 tom'w to force a game 7 on Thursday, plus Boston/Washington game 7 tom'w and NYR/Ottawa game 7 on Thursday.

I didn't turn it on until the 3rd period right before the boarding penalty.
Chicago will defintely be in the market for a goalie this offseason.
The west looks weird without Detroit, Chicago, and Vancouver there.....but it will be good seeing a different team get a chance. There's going to be alot of 1-0, 2-1 games with these matchups.
Had to miss the Rangers/Senators game.

I just saw Ottawa's 2nd goal from last night. That was a pathetic blown call by the refs....Lundqvist was pushed out of the way and the puck went off of a skate. Good thing it didn't effect the outcome.
Tickets still available for game 6 in Newark......almost considered it, but have a big project at work.

I'm not sure if his skate actually connected with the puck...it looked pretty close. I have a feeling Lundqvist may get a fine for his comments. Besides yelling at the refs when it happened, after the horn sounded he yelled at another ref and yelled into the camera as he was walking off the ice. I would love to know what he said all 3 times.

Goalie interference calls are very inconsistent. That goal was allowed, but the Neal goal on Sunday, where he was pushed into the goalie, was waved off. I'm not sure if the officiating has actually deteriorated this much, or if it's just a perfect storm where everything that can go wrong for the officials can. I'm leaning towards the former, especially given how much looser they let things get in the second half of the season, and how much of this postseason's issue could have been prevented with a little common sense.

Alex Smith played out of his mind last night. Blackhawks definitely to take some long looks at their current line-up during the off season.

Parity, anyone? Think about this. There were ten teams that finished the regular season with over 100 points. If things fall the right way over the next two nights, as few as three of those 10 will make it to the second round of the playoffs. Two series featured two teams with 100+ points, so two teams were guaranteed to make it to the second round.
But three game sevens! Whee!

Good night, Bruins - OT game 7 loss. Another 100+ point team bites the dust. No more than five can make the second round now.

Rangers over Senators - Rangers rounding into form....Ottawa isn't playing as well (don't like losing out to the 8th spot) Bruins over Capitals - Bruins are playing better.....so is Washington, Backstrom could be back. Caps uncertainty at goalie a big difference Devils over Panthers - not really an upset. Devils are hot and should be the all around better team. Flyers over Pens - I cringe saying it, but think the regular season carries over to the playoffs. The 3-2 OT and 6-4 wins were statements.
Canucks over Kings - They may choke later, but should be OK enough for this round. Kings not much offense Sharks over Blues - my upset...(not that I know much)....Blues weren't great down the stretch. Team with great goaltending but inexperience vs. a team with experience that kind of dogs it at times. I think SJ did OK with the back to back wins over LA, and could go forward Blackhawks over Coyotes - I like the experience factor here too. Toews supposed to be back too. Smith could win it for AZ Predators over Red Wings - really tough to pick....I think Nashville now was enough scoring (Radulov), a shutdown defense and Rinne. The Wings have more experience (yes, I'm being inconsistant based on the last 2 picks), but older and battling more injuries. Gotten 2 right so far, with 2 still up for grabs.

I heard a slightly interesting this morning.
Of the 6 teams in the 2nd round so far, 5 have never won the Cup yet. If Ottawa and Florida both win tonight, it will be a 7 of 8 chance for a 1st time winner.

Hadn't thought about that, but...none of the teams in the West has won, and only two have made the finals (Kings and Blues). Only Philly, the Devils and the Rangers have won in the East. Technically, a team called the Ottawa Senators won the Cup, but not the same franchise even if they did hang banners. Alan
